I groaned, pulling a pillow over my head as my family burst into song. "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Emily, happy birthday to you!"
"Ugh, I'm nine now," I complained, my voice muffled by the pillow. "Can't I just stay eight forever?"
My older sister, Sarah, walked into the room, a smirk on her face. "Sure thing, baby," she said, ruffling my hair. "You can stay eight and I'll keep being the mature one."
I threw a pillow at her, scowling. "I'm not a baby, Sarah. I'm nine."
Our mom, a confident woman with a no-nonsense attitude, walked in and gave Sarah a look. "Be nice, Sarah. Emily was just as excited for her birthday at that age."
Dad, a jokester and a bit of a flirt, followed behind mom. "Hey there, birthday girl," he said, grinning at me. "You're going to be the most popular nine-year-old in school, you know."
I rolled my eyes. "Dad, stop being embarrassing."
My older brother, a quiet and reserved thirteen-year-old, walked in and handed me a present. I tore off the wrapping paper to reveal a book. "Thanks, nerd," I teased, grinning at him.
Grandma, a sassy and opinionated woman, walked in and shooed everyone out of the room. "Let the girl open her presents in peace," she said, winking at me.
I opened the rest of my presents, including a new bike, a dress, and a board game. "Thanks, everyone," I said, smiling. "I can't wait to use these."
Mom asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, and I said I wanted to have a party with my friends. Sarah offered to help plan the party, but I shook my head. "I can handle it myself," I said, determined.
Mom gave me a look, but ultimately let me take charge. The rest of the day was spent planning the party, with my family occasionally offering their help but ultimately letting me take the lead.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on how lucky I was to have such a strong and supportive family. I went to bed feeling excited for my birthday party and grateful for the love and support of my family.
