The sound of my feet hitting the mat echoed through the small apartment as I practiced my gymnastics routine. I was in the zone, my body moving fluidly through the motions, my mind clear of everything but the music and the movements.
But my peace was shattered when the door to my room burst open, revealing my mother and her latest boyfriend, both of them reeking of alcohol.
"Akane!" my mother snapped, her voice slurred. "We need to talk."
I sighed and stopped my routine, wiping the sweat from my forehead. "Can it wait? I'm in the middle of something."
The boyfriend leered at me, his eyes lingering on my body. I fought the urge to shrink away from his gaze, instead meeting his eyes with a cold stare.
"No, it can't wait," my mother said, her voice growing angrier. "I want to know if the rumors about you and Nekomaru are true."
I rolled my eyes. "Of course not. You know how people love to gossip."
My mother's face twisted in anger. "Don't lie to me, you little slut! I know you're sleeping around and not caring about this family!"
I gritted my teeth, trying to keep my temper in check. "I'm not sleeping around, I'm just living my life. And I'm not a slut."
The boyfriend chuckled, his breath hot and sour on my neck. "I bet you are. I bet you're real good at it too."
I snapped, whirling on him. "Get the fuck away from me. I'm not interested in whatever sick fantasies you have."
The boyfriend's face darkened and he took a step towards me, but my mother stepped in between us.
"Stop it, both of you!" she cried. "This isn't helping anything."
She turned to me, her eyes filled with tears. "Akane, I know about the baby. I know you're pregnant."
I froze, my heart sinking. I hadn't told anyone about the baby yet, not even Nekomaru. I wasn't sure how to feel about it, but I knew I couldn't keep it.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, my voice shaking. "I didn't mean for it to happen."
My mother's face crumpled and she started to sob. "I can't afford another child, Akane. We're struggling as it is."
I felt a pang of guilt. I knew they were having a hard time, but I didn't know it was this bad.
"I'll help," I said, my voice firm. "I'll get a job and help out financially."
The boyfriend snorted. "A job? She's just a kid. She can't work."
I glared at him. "I'm not a kid. I'm almost an adult. And I can work."
The boyfriend's eyes gleamed with a sick excitement. "We could make some extra money if you sold your...services."
I felt a wave of disgust and anger wash over me. "Get out of my house. Now."
My mother, defeated, nodded. "I'm sorry, Akane. I didn't mean for it to go this way."
I looked at her, my heart heavy. "It's okay, mom. I forgive you."
But as I watched her stumble to her room, I knew that I couldn't rely on her anymore. I had to take matters into my own hands and make a better life for myself and my child.
I fell asleep that night, exhausted, but I was awakened by a loud noise coming from the living room. I rushed out to find the boyfriend gone and my mother, passed out on the floor, reeking of alcohol.
With a mix of anger and sadness, I realized that I was on my own. But I was determined to make it work. I would overcome the challenges ahead and make a better life for myself and my child.
