The door to Akane’s apartment creaked open, the sound of her own heavy breathing the only thing to greet her after a long day of teaching and grading papers. She kicked off her shoes and padded her way to the living room, eager to relax and unwind.
But any hope of peace and quiet was quickly dashed as she entered the room. There, sprawled out on the couch, was her mother, drunk as a skunk and surrounded by empty bottles of sake. And if the sight of her mother in such a state wasn’t bad enough, she was also accompanied by yet another middle-aged man, this one with a greasy combover and a sleazy smile.
Akane rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to say something, but her mother beat her to the punch. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t my little pregnant princess,” she slurred, a crude grin spreading across her face.
Akane’s hand instinctively went to her belly, where her unborn child was growing. She had always been a late bloomer, and the fact that she was pregnant at the ripe old age of twenty-five was just another reminder of that.
The man next to her mother let out a snide chuckle. “I can’t believe you’re gonna be a mom, Akane. You’re not getting any younger, you know.”
Akane’s eyes narrowed as she looked at the man. She had always hated people who felt the need to comment on her age, and this guy was no exception. “And I can’t believe you’re dating a woman old enough to be your mother,” she shot back, a wicked grin on her face.
The man’s smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly recovered. “Well, your mother and I have made a decision about your little situation,” he said, his tone dripping with condescension.
Akane’s heart started racing as she braced herself for the worst. She had always known that her mother would try to control her life, but she never thought it would come to this.
Her mother hiccuped and leaned forward, a serious look on her face. “You’re gonna have to marry the father of that baby, Akane. It’s the right thing to do.”
Akane’s mouth dropped open in shock. “What? No! I can’t do that!” she protested, her voice shaking.
The man chimed in, a smug look on his face. “It’s the best thing for everyone. Nekomaru will take care of you and the baby.”
Akane couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She felt trapped, like there was no way out of this situation. She tried to reason with her mother, to make her understand that she didn’t want to marry Nekomaru, but it was no use. Her mother was too drunk to understand anything.
In desperation, Akane threatened to run away. But her mother just laughed and told her that she wouldn’t get far, not in their neighborhood where death was common.
Akane’s mind raced as she tried to think of a way out of this mess. She knew she couldn’t marry Nekomaru, but she also knew that her mother would never listen to reason. She was on her own, and she would have to find a way to escape this situation.
But for now, all she could do was storm out of the room and slam the door behind her, the sound of her mother’s laughter still ringing in her ears.
