The door to Artemis' bedchamber creaked open, and Apollo strode in, a tray of food balanced precariously in his hands. He had been coaxed into bringing his twin sister her breakfast, despite her reputation for being, well, less than pleasant first thing in the morning.
But as he entered the room, he was met with an assault of smells that was anything but pleasant. The overpowering stench of sweat and unwashed linens hit him like a wave, causing him to wrinkle his nose in disgust.
Artemis, the goddess of the moon and hunt, was lying in bed, her curly brown hair matted and tangled. She groaned at the sight of her twin brother, turning her head away as if the very sight of him pained her.
Apollo set the tray down on a nearby table with a clatter, trying to keep his voice light and cheerful as he attempted to coax Artemis into eating. "Come now, sister, you must keep up your strength. You have a busy day ahead of you."
But Artemis merely turned her head further away, her shoulders rigid with refusal. Apollo couldn't help but notice the state of the bedchamber - clothes and linens were strewn about, and there was a general air of neglect that was unlike the fastidious Artemis he knew.
He scolded her gently, trying to keep the edge out of his voice. "Artemis, you cannot continue to live like this. You are a goddess, and you have duties to attend to. You cannot neglect yourself in such a manner."
Artemis retorted with a playful insult, her voice tinged with bitterness. "And what of you, sun-soaked showoff? Always prancing around in your gleaming armor, showing off your perfect abs."
Apollo couldn't help but chuckle at her words, trying to reason with her. "Artemis, I am simply trying to help. You have been neglecting yourself since...well, since the incident. And I understand that it has been difficult for you. But you must take care of yourself."
Artemis' shoulders sagged, and she admitted in a quiet voice, "I know. I have been struggling since I was forced to...to get an abortion. I broke my vow of chastity, and I cannot forgive myself for it."
Apollo's heart ached for his sister, understanding her pain and guilt. He expressed his support, but urged her to take care of herself. "Artemis, I understand. And I am here for you. But you must take care of yourself. You cannot let yourself fall apart like this."
Artemis finally agreed to eat, but only if Apollo would leave her be afterwards. He acquiesced, but made her promise to shower and leave her bedchamber the next day. She agreed, and Apollo left the tray of food with her before departing.
As Artemis began to eat, she couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt and sadness that weighed her down. She decided to take a bath, hoping that it would help her feel clean and refreshed.
As she stepped into the bath, she reflected on her actions and vowed to be stronger and more in control of her own destiny. She would not let herself be ruled by her guilt and sadness any longer.
And with that, Artemis began to wash away the dirt and grime of the past, determined to start anew and take control of her own life.
