Artemis, the goddess of the moon and hunt, sat in her temple in the heart of the forest. The smell of sweat and something else she couldn't quite place hung in the air. She was going over her hunting plans for the day when she heard the sound of footsteps approaching. She tensed, her hand instinctively reaching for the bow that lay beside her.
The footsteps grew louder, and then the temple doors swung open, revealing Apollo, the god of the sun and music. Artemis' heart skipped a beat at the sight of him. She had always been close to her brother, but in that moment, she felt a flicker of annoyance. He had a habit of showing up unannounced, and she wasn't in the mood for his company today.
Apollo strode towards her, a smile on his face. He hugged her, and Artemis stiffened at his touch. She had never been one for physical affection, especially from her brother.
Pulling back, Apollo looked at Artemis with a raised eyebrow. "You smell... different," he said, his nose twitching.
Artemis' cheeks flushed, and she stammered, "I-I don't know what you're talking about."
Apollo's eyes narrowed. "You've broken your vow of chastity, haven't you?"
Artemis' heart raced. She couldn't deny it. "It's none of your business," she snapped.
Apollo's face darkened. "You're my sister. Of course, it's my business."
Artemis sighed. "Fine. Yes, I broke my vow with Orion."
Apollo's eyes widened. "Orion? The hunter?"
Artemis nodded. "Yes, him."
Apollo's face turned red with anger. "How could you do this? He's just a mortal!"
Artemis stood, her eyes flashing. "He's more than just a mortal to me. And I won't let you hurt him."
Apollo scoffed. "You think you can stop me?"
Artemis grabbed her bow and quiver. "Try me."
Apollo's face softened, and he sighed. "Fine. I won't kill him. But you need to be careful, Artemis. You're a goddess. You can't let yourself be ruled by your desires."
Artemis nodded, but she couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment. She knew Apollo was right, but she couldn't help how she felt about Orion.
Apollo looked at her, his eyes filled with concern. "I just want you to be happy, Artemis. But you need to be careful. You have a responsibility to the other gods and to the mortals."
Artemis rolled her eyes. "I can handle myself, Apollo. I don't need you to tell me how to live my life."
Apollo held up his hands in surrender. "I'm just looking out for you, sister. That's all."
Artemis softened. "I know. And I appreciate it. But I need to do this, Apollo. I need to be with Orion."
Apollo sighed. "I understand. But promise me you'll be careful."
Artemis nodded. "I promise."
Apollo smiled. "Good. Now, let's go hunting. I have a feeling it's going to be a good day."
Artemis grinned, her earlier annoyance forgotten. She loved hunting with her brother, and she was looking forward to the day ahead.
As they left the temple, Artemis couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She was taking a risk by being with Orion, but she was willing to take that risk. She was a goddess, and she was in control of her own destiny.
