Chapter 1: The Morning After
Ciara woke with a pounding headache, the kind that felt like a jackhammer had taken up residence in her skull. The room was dim, heavy velvet curtains blocking out the world, but the scent of lavender and something muskier lingered in the air. Her mouth tasted like regret and cheap vodka, her body sprawled across silk sheets that definitely weren’t hers. She groaned, rolling over, only to freeze as her hand brushed against warm, bare skin.
'What the actual fuck?' she muttered, eyes snapping open. Beside her, a woman with raven-black hair and a smirk that could melt steel stared back. Her name was Lilith, or at least that’s what Ciara vaguely remembered from the blur of last night. Lilith’s piercing green eyes raked over Ciara’s disheveled form, unapologetic and hungry.
‘Morning, darling,’ Lilith purred, her voice a low, sultry drawl that sent an unexpected shiver down Ciara’s spine. ‘You were quite the wildcat last night. Thought I’d have to tie you down just to keep up.’
Ciara bolted upright, clutching the sheet to her chest, her cheeks flaming. ‘I don’t even know where the hell I am, let alone who you are. And I’m straight, so whatever you’re implying—’
Lilith laughed, a sharp, wicked sound that cut through Ciara’s protest. ‘Straight? Honey, last night you were begging for a taste of something you’ve never had. Don’t play coy now. I can still feel your nails on my back.’ She stretched languidly, the sheet slipping to reveal a toned, tattooed shoulder. ‘Besides, you’re in the House of Elysium. Welcome to paradise… or sin, depending on your perspective.’
Ciara’s mind raced, fragments of the night flashing back—shots, laughter, hands on her hips, a chant she couldn’t quite place. ‘House of Elysium? Sounds like a pretentious sex club. I’m out.’ She swung her legs over the bed, ignoring the ache in her thighs, but Lilith’s hand shot out, gripping her wrist with surprising strength.
‘Not so fast,’ Lilith said, her tone shifting to something darker, more commanding. ‘You stumbled into our world, Ciara. You drank our wine, danced in our circle. You’re not just a guest—you’re ours now. At least until you understand.’
Ciara yanked her hand free, glaring. ‘I don’t belong to anyone, sweetheart. I’m a mess, sure, but I’m my own mess. So unless you’ve got a damn good reason to keep me here, I’m walking.’
Lilith’s smirk returned, sharper this time. ‘Oh, I’ve got reasons. And trust me, you’ll want to hear them… or feel them.’ She leaned closer, her breath hot against Ciara’s ear. ‘You’ve got fire, and we love to play with fire here. Let me show you just how hot it can get.’
Ciara’s breath hitched, her body betraying her with a flush of heat she couldn’t ignore. She hated how Lilith’s words stirred something primal, something she’d buried under years of bad decisions and worse hangovers. ‘You’re full of shit,’ she snapped, but her voice wavered, and Lilith caught it.
‘Am I?’ Lilith whispered, her fingers trailing up Ciara’s arm, leaving goosebumps in their wake. ‘Then why are you still sitting here, darling? Why aren’t you running?’
Ciara’s jaw tightened, but she didn’t move. The room seemed to close in, the air thick with tension. Lilith’s hand slid higher, brushing the edge of the sheet, and Ciara felt a dangerous pull—a curiosity she couldn’t shake. She turned, meeting Lilith’s gaze, her own eyes blazing with defiance and something else. Something hungry.
‘Fine,’ Ciara bit out, her voice low and raw. ‘Show me. But don’t think for a second I’m some pawn in your little game. I play to win.’
Lilith’s grin was feral. ‘Oh, I’m counting on it.’ She tugged the sheet away in one swift motion, exposing Ciara’s bare skin to the cool air, and leaned in, her lips hovering just above Ciara’s. The heat between them was electric, a storm waiting to break, and as Lilith’s hand slid down Ciara’s thigh, promising more, Ciara knew she was teetering on the edge of something she couldn’t control—but damn if she didn’t want to dive in headfirst.
