Roy stood on Beatrice's front porch, his breath still heavy from his jog. He had told himself he was just passing by, but the truth was, he wanted to see her. Now, with her door just a few feet away, he struggled to come up with a good excuse for being there.
Before he could say a word, the door swung open, and Beatrice stood before him. He was so startled, he almost knocked her over in his eagerness. She let out a laugh and playfully slapped a hand over his mouth to silence him.
"What are you doing here, Roy?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Roy took a deep breath, trying to compose himself. "I was just... jogging by and thought I'd say hello."
Beatrice raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying his story. "Jogging by, huh? At 7 in the morning?"
Roy felt his face flush. "Well, I couldn't sleep."
Beatrice's expression softened. "Come on in, I was just making some coffee."
Roy followed her into the kitchen, taking a seat at the table. Beatrice poured him a cup and slid it across the table.
"So, what's new with you?" she asked, taking a sip of her own coffee.
Roy hesitated for a moment, then decided to just go for it. "I saw the article in the paper about the new pancake house opening. I know how much you wanted to open your own place."
Beatrice groaned and rolled her eyes. "Ugh, don't remind me. It's just another chain restaurant, ruining the charm of this town."
Roy nodded in agreement. "What are you going to do?"
Beatrice leaned back in her chair, a determined look in her eyes. "I'll figure something out. I always do."
Roy was about to ask her what she meant, when she held up a hand to stop him. "Wait, I have something to show you."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small topaz charm, attached to a delicate gold ring.
"Do you recognize this?" she asked, her voice low.
Roy studied the ring, his eyes widening as he realized what it was. "Is that... is that your mother's ring?"
Beatrice nodded. "My stepmother, Lonna, stole it from her. I took matters into my own hands."
Roy was shocked by Beatrice's confession, but he couldn't deny the sense of admiration he felt for her. "You stole it back?"
Beatrice grinned. "Let's just say I convinced her to give it back to me."
Roy shook his head, amazed by her bravery. "You're incredible, Beatrice."
Beatrice blushed at the compliment. "Thanks. So, what about you? How's your family?"
Roy's expression clouded over. "My brother and I had a falling out after an argument between my parents."
Beatrice reached out and placed a hand on his arm. "I'm sorry, Roy. That must be tough."
Roy nodded, grateful for her understanding. "It is. But I'm managing."
Beatrice's expression turned serious. "Roy, if you ever need a place to stay, you know you can always come to me, right?"
Roy was touched by her offer, but he knew he couldn't accept. "Thanks, Beatrice. But I think it's better if I stay with my dad for now."
Beatrice nodded, understanding. "I get it. But just know, I'm here if you need me."
Roy felt a warmth spread through his chest at her words. "I appreciate that, Beatrice."
Just then, the bus stop outside came to life with the sound of kids chattering and laughing. Beatrice stood up, grabbing her soccer bag.
"I better get going," she said, heading towards the door.
Roy followed her, feeling a sense of disappointment. He didn't want her to leave.
But then, to his surprise, Beatrice turned to him and smiled. "Want to sit with me on the bus?"
Roy's face lit up. "Really?"
Beatrice nodded. "Yeah. I think we make a good team, Roy."
Roy couldn't agree more. He followed her out to the bus stop, feeling a sense of camaraderie and excitement.
As they sat down on the bus, Beatrice turned to him and grinned. "So, Tex, what's your story?"
Roy laughed, enjoying the playful insult. "Not much to tell, Bea. Just a small-town boy, trying to make it big."
Beatrice rolled her eyes, but Roy could see the smile in her eyes. "Sure thing, Tex. I'll believe that when I see it."
Roy felt a growing connection to Beatrice, admiring her strength and confidence. As they talked, he began to imagine a possible future with her, filled with adventure and mischief.
For now, he was just happy to be sitting next to her, feeling the warmth of her presence and the thrill of their connection. He knew there would be challenges ahead, but with Beatrice by his side, he felt ready to take on anything.
