The Grand Hall of the Barbarian Kingdom loomed like a fortress of raw, untamed power, its stone walls draped in furs and the air thick with the scent of pine and last night’s revelry. The early morning haze filtered through narrow windows, casting golden streaks across the sprawling fur-laden bed where Alex Steel, the young and brawny leader of the Unyielding Fist Tribe, stirred from a deep, sated slumber. His muscles ached in the best way possible, a testament to the wild night before, and as he shifted, he felt the warm, possessive grip of Human Queen Elizabeth Hope still clinging to his arm.
Elizabeth’s raven hair spilled over his chest, her sharp emerald eyes already glinting with mischief as she propped herself up on one elbow. “Well, well, barbarian boy,” she purred, her voice a sultry command that cut through the quiet. “Did I break you last night, or are you just pretending to be this worn out?”
Alex grinned, his chiseled jaw tightening as he met her gaze. “Break me? Woman, I’m forged from steel. Though I’ll admit, you damn near melted me.” He chuckled, a low rumble, but there was a flicker of vulnerability in his stormy blue eyes as he added, “First time, you know. Never thought it’d be with a queen who could command an army with one hand and me with the other.”
Her lips curled into a wicked smile, and she traced a finger down his chest, her touch both teasing and territorial. “First time, huh? Could’ve fooled me, Alex. You roared louder than any war cry I’ve heard on the battlefield.” She leaned closer, her breath hot against his ear. “But tell me, big man, do those nightmares of yours still haunt you after a night like that?”
He tensed for a moment, the weight of old ghosts flashing across his face before he masked it with a smirk. “Nightmares? Nah. Not when I’ve got a queen to chase ‘em away. Though I reckon you’ve given me new things to dream about, Elizabeth.”
She laughed, a sharp, commanding sound that filled the room. “Good. Now, get your fine backside out of this bed and rally the others for breakfast. I’m starving, and I don’t mean for more of you. Not yet, anyway.” Her tone left no room for argument, and with a playful shove, she sent him rolling to the edge of the furs.
Alex groaned dramatically but complied, standing in all his naked glory, muscles rippling as he stretched. As he reached for his leather breeches, his hand brushed against a small vial hidden among his belongings—a potion rumored to restore virginity. A mischievous glint sparked in his eye as he pocketed it, casting a sly glance at Elizabeth. “Just in case you decide to claim another first, Your Majesty,” he muttered under his breath, though loud enough for her to hear.
She arched a brow, her smirk dangerous. “Keep dreaming, Steel. I don’t do repeats unless they’re exceptional. Prove yourself at breakfast first.”
With a mock salute, Alex strode out of the chamber, his bare feet slapping against the cold stone floor as he made his way to the dining hall. The cavernous space was already alive with the clatter of plates and the sharp, witty voices of the women who had claimed this barbarian stronghold as their temporary domain. A feast of roasted boar, fresh bread, and honeyed mead awaited, but the real feast was the banter sizzling hotter than the hearth.
Vampire Queen Valentina Rodriguez lounged at the head of the table, her crimson lips stained with the faintest trace of blood—or was it wine? Her sisters, Carmen and Elena, flanked her, their pale skin glowing in the morning light as they sipped from goblets with predatory grace. Across from them sat Succubus Queen Lilith Raven, her dark, smoky eyes glinting with amusement, while her daughters, Li and Mei, whispered and giggled behind their hands.
“Well, if it isn’t the barbarian stud himself,” Lilith drawled, her voice dripping with honeyed venom as Alex entered. She leaned back in her chair, her curves barely contained by the sheer black silk she wore. “We heard everything last night, Alex. Walls aren’t as thick as your skull, apparently. Tell me, did Elizabeth have to draw you a map, or did you stumble into the right spots on your own?”
The table erupted in laughter, and Alex’s face flushed a rare shade of crimson. He scratched the back of his neck, trying to muster a comeback. “I, uh, figured it out. Didn’t hear any complaints, did I?”
“Oh, darling,” Valentina cut in, her accent a sultry purr as she twirled a strand of midnight hair around her finger. “We weren’t complaining. We were taking notes. Though, Carmen here thinks you could use a lesson in stamina. Isn’t that right, sister?”
Carmen smirked, baring just a hint of fang. “Absolutely. I’ve drained men dry in half the time it took you to finish one round, barbarian. Care for a private tutoring session?”
Elena chimed in, her voice cool and cutting. “Only if I get to watch. I’m curious if he’s as unyielding as his tribe’s name suggests.”
Alex opened his mouth to retort, but Lilith wasn’t done. She stood, sauntering over to him with a sway that could hypnotize an army. “Don’t be shy, sweet boy. We’re all friends here. Or at least, we will be once you stop blushing like a virgin. Oh, wait—” She clapped a hand over her mouth in mock horror, drawing another round of cackles from the table.
“Enough, Lilith,” Alex growled, though there was a reluctant grin tugging at his lips. “I’ve got enough scars without you lot carving me up with your tongues.”
Before the banter could escalate further, a guard burst into the hall, his face pale and urgent. “Chief Steel, my queens—our food supplies are dangerously low. The last hunt barely sustained us through the feast.”
Alex’s playful demeanor vanished, replaced by the steely resolve of a leader. “Then we hunt again. Today. I’ll lead the party myself.” He turned to Valentina and her sisters, his tone shifting to a challenge. “Care to join me, ladies? I hear fresh blood is your specialty.”
Valentina’s eyes gleamed with hunger, and she licked her lips. “Oh, Alex, you know just how to tempt a girl. We’re in. Carmen, Elena—let’s show this barbarian how to track prey.”
Carmen grinned wickedly. “Only if I get first bite.”
“Not if I beat you to it,” Elena shot back, already rising from her seat.
Lilith, never one to be left out, clapped her hands with a devilish smirk. “And why stop at a hunt? I propose a detour. Alex, darling, you’re filthy from last night’s... exertions. Join us for a shower at the waterfall nearby. Li and I insist.”
Li, her eyes glinting with mischief, nodded eagerly. “Yes, Chief. It’s only fair we all get a turn to... rinse off together.”
Mei giggled, adding, “Don’t be shy now. We’ve already heard what you’re capable of.”
Alex hesitated, his jaw tightening as he glanced at the group of powerful, commanding women surrounding him. “A shower, huh? Fine. But I warn you, I don’t share well. You’ll have to fight me for the best spot under the falls.”
Valentina laughed, a rich, throaty sound. “Oh, we’ll fight, barbarian. And we’ll win. Won’t we, sisters?”
“Always,” Carmen and Elena said in unison, their gazes predatory.
Lilith stepped closer, her hand brushing Alex’s arm with deliberate intent. “Lead the way, big man. Or do I have to drag you there myself?”
Before he could respond, Alex swept Lilith off her feet in one fluid motion, hoisting her over his shoulder as she let out a startled yelp that dissolved into laughter. “Drag me? Nah, I’ll carry you instead. Let’s see if you can keep up with a barbarian’s pace.”
Her protests were laced with mirth as she swatted at his back. “Put me down, you brute! Or I’ll make you regret it under that waterfall!”
The others followed, their laughter and sharp quips echoing through the hall as they headed toward the cascading waters outside. The morning had already burned hot with tension and teasing, and as the mist of the waterfall loomed ahead, it was clear the day’s heat was only just beginning to rise. Power plays and steamy encounters awaited, and Alex Steel was right in the heart of it all—whether he was ready or not.
