Chapter 1: The Game of Power
I’m not supposed to be here. The cold, gray walls of Ironhaven Penitentiary close in around me like a vice, the air thick with the stench of desperation and regret. I’m Lila Voss, 25, with a face that could charm a devil and a body that’s gotten me out of more trouble than I care to admit. But charm doesn’t mean shit behind bars. Here, it’s all about power—and I’m starting from scratch.
I’ve got a boyfriend on the outside, Jake, who’s probably pacing his apartment right now, wondering how the hell his sweet, fiery Lila ended up in a place like this. I miss him—his touch, his laugh—but I can’t afford to dwell on that. Not if I want to survive. Word is, if you want protection in Ironhaven, you get close to Rex Malone. He’s the kingpin of this concrete jungle, a beast of a man with a reputation for breaking bones and bending wills. And me? I’m not the type to bend for anyone. But I’m also not stupid. I need him on my side.
It’s my third day when I spot him in the yard, all six-foot-four of pure, raw muscle, barking orders to a crew of inmates who scatter like roaches under his glare. His eyes, sharp as a blade, catch mine across the gravel. I don’t look away. I can’t afford to. Instead, I saunter over, hips swaying just enough to draw attention, my smirk loaded with challenge.
‘Heard you’re the man to know around here, Malone,’ I say, voice low, dripping with confidence. I stop a foot away, close enough to smell the sweat and danger rolling off him.
He looks me up and down, a predator sizing up prey—or maybe a rival. ‘And who the hell are you, princess? Fresh meat with a death wish?’ His voice is gravelly, a smirk tugging at his scarred lip.
‘Lila Voss. And I’m no princess. I’m just a woman who knows how to play the game. Question is, are you worth playing with?’ I tilt my head, letting my gaze linger on his broad chest before snapping back to his eyes.
He laughs, a dark, rumbling sound that sends a shiver down my spine—not from fear, but something else. Something dangerous. ‘You’ve got balls, Voss. Or should I say, a hell of a mouth on you. Careful, though. Talk like that might get you in trouble.’
‘Trouble’s my middle name,’ I fire back, stepping closer, my breath mingling with his. ‘But I’m betting you’re the kind who likes a little chaos. Am I wrong?’
His smirk widens, and I can see the spark of interest in his eyes. ‘You’re not wrong. But I don’t play for free. What’s in it for me?’
I lean in, my lips brushing just past his ear as I whisper, ‘Stick with me, Malone, and you’ll find out I’m worth more than any deal in this shithole.’ I pull back, catching the heat in his stare, the way his jaw tightens. My heart’s pounding, but I keep my cool. I’ve got him hooked—I can feel it.
Later that night, in the dim flicker of the cell block lights, he corners me near the showers. The air’s heavy, charged with something primal. ‘You’ve been running that mouth all day, Voss,’ he growls, his body close, heat radiating off him. ‘Time to see if you can back it up.’
I don’t flinch. ‘Try me,’ I challenge, my voice steady, my eyes locked on his. My skin’s already prickling with anticipation, my mind racing with how far I’m willing to go to secure my place here. His hand brushes my arm, rough and deliberate, and I know we’re teetering on the edge of something explosive. Whatever happens next, I’m ready to play hard—and win.
