Chapter 1: Unspoken Heat
The cabin smelled of pine and regret, a suffocating mix that clung to Nico’s skin as he swayed slightly, the cheap whiskey still burning in his throat. He didn’t know why Kaia was here, standing in the dim light of the single bulb flickering above them, her arms crossed and her sharp green eyes slicing through the haze of his buzz. They hadn’t spoken—really spoken—in over a year, not since he’d ditched her for his boyfriend, shoving her to the sidelines like she was nothing more than a childhood relic. But now, with the weight of a fresh breakup pressing down on him, her presence felt like a punch to the gut.
‘So, what, you’re just gonna stand there and stare at me like I’m the one who broke your heart?’ Kaia’s voice cut through the silence, her tone dripping with a mix of irritation and something dangerously close to concern. She stepped closer, her boots scuffing against the wooden floor, her dark hair falling over one shoulder as she tilted her head. ‘You look like shit, Nico. What the hell happened to you?’
Nico let out a bitter laugh, running a hand through his messy black hair. ‘Oh, fuck off, Kaia. You don’t get to play savior now. Not after I—’ He stopped, the words catching in his throat. Not after I pushed you away. Not after I ignored the way my chest used to tighten every time you smiled at me, even though I knew I was gay, knew I could never have you like that.
Her lips curled into a smirk, but her eyes softened for just a split second. ‘You’re drunk, aren’t you? God, you’re pathetic. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you called me here to cry on my shoulder.’ She stepped even closer, her breath warm against the cool air of the cabin, her scent—something wild and citrusy—hitting him like a wave. ‘But we both know you’re too proud for that, aren’t you?’
‘Maybe I just wanted to see if you’d show up,’ Nico shot back, his voice low, almost a growl. He didn’t know why he said it, didn’t know why his heart was racing as she stared him down, her gaze unflinching. ‘Maybe I wanted to see if you still gave a damn.’
Kaia’s laugh was sharp, cutting. ‘Oh, I give a damn, alright. I give a damn about figuring out why the hell I’m still standing here with a guy who treated me like I was invisible for a whole fucking year.’ But her voice wavered at the end, and Nico saw it—the flicker of hurt, the raw edge she couldn’t quite hide. It did something to him, something dangerous, stirring a heat he hadn’t felt in months.
He didn’t know how it happened. One second, they were standing there, the tension between them a live wire, and the next, he was closing the gap, his hands gripping her waist as his lips crashed into hers. Kaia froze for a heartbeat, then pushed back with equal force, her fingers tangling in his hair as she kissed him like she was claiming something long overdue. Her mouth was hot, demanding, and Nico groaned against her, the whiskey on his tongue mixing with the taste of her—sharp, sweet, and entirely too fucking addictive.
‘This doesn’t mean shit,’ Kaia hissed between kisses, her hands sliding down his chest, nails digging into his skin through his thin shirt. ‘You’re still an asshole.’
‘Yeah?’ Nico panted, his voice rough as he backed her against the cabin wall, his body pressing into hers, feeling the heat radiating off her. ‘Then why’re you kissing me like you’ve been waiting for this?’
Her eyes flashed with defiance, but her smirk was wicked. ‘Maybe I just wanna see how far you’ll go before you remember who you are.’ Her hand slipped lower, teasing the waistband of his jeans, and Nico’s breath hitched, his body already responding, hard and aching for more.
The air between them was electric, charged with a year’s worth of unspoken words and buried desires. Nico’s hands roamed her curves, desperate and hungry, while Kaia’s sharp gasps fueled the fire building inside him. They were teetering on the edge of something explosive, something neither of them could take back—and neither of them wanted to stop.
