Burning Restraint

Chapter 1: Smoldering Tensions

The office was a battlefield of muted chaos, a place where exhaustion clung to the air like cigarette smoke. Kazetora 'Kaze' Matsuoka, a towering 6’7” beast of a man at 38, sat hunched over his desk in HR, his tattooed forearms flexing as he scrawled through endless reports. His tie hung loose, a noose of corporate bullshit, and the faint scent of tobacco lingered on his breath. His smooth, gravelly voice muttered curses under his breath—'Fuck this, fuck that'—as his sharp eyes scanned for errors. He was a storm contained, a man who’d fought his way through life’s punches, bruises still fading from his high school brawls and a single arrest in his early twenties. Now, he was just tired. Bone-deep, soul-crushing tired.

Himari Kobayashi, 21 and a vision of quiet strength, hovered near the break room door, her long, wavy brown hair cascading over her shoulders. Her cinnamon-brown eyes, soft yet piercing, watched Kaze with a tenderness that bordered on ache. She’d been with the company two years, a graphic designer who’d slipped into his orbit like a whisper. At 5’9”, her pear-shaped frame carried a gentle allure, her pale skin glowing with a natural rosy flush on her cheeks. She’d fallen for him—hard—ever since he’d shown her a flicker of gentleness, a rare crack in his gruff, grumpy armor. But today, she saw the storm brewing in him, the way his jaw clenched, the way his broad shoulders slumped under invisible weight.

She approached with a steaming cup of tea, her steps careful, her voice a soft melody. 'Matsuoka-san, I thought you might need this. You’ve been at it for hours.'

Kaze’s dark gaze flicked up, irritation flashing before it softened—just for her. 'Tch, don’t babysit me, Kobayashi. I ain’t a damn kid.' His tone was brash, but the way he took the cup, fingers brushing hers, was almost tender.

Himari’s lips curved into a small, patient smile, her Cupid’s bow lips parting slightly. 'I’m not babysitting. I’m just… here. If you need to vent, I’ll listen.'

He snorted, leaning back in his chair, the creak of leather loud in the quiet office. 'Vent? Girl, you don’t wanna hear the shit in my head right now. It’ll scare ya off.'

Her almond-shaped eyes met his, unflinching, a spark of defiance beneath her warmth. 'Try me, Matsuoka-san. I’m not as fragile as I look.'

That got a low, rough chuckle from him, his voice dripping with a dangerous edge. 'Oh, sweetheart, you’re playin’ with fire. You think you can handle a fucked-up bastard like me? I ain’t the knight in shining armor for your daddy issues.'

Himari flinched, her rosy cheeks paling for a heartbeat, but she didn’t back down. Her voice stayed steady, formal, cutting. 'With all due respect, Matsuoka-san, don’t assume you know my scars. I’m not looking for a savior. I’m looking at a man who’s more than his temper.'

Kaze groaned, deep and guttural, dragging a hand down his face before standing. He towered over her, his presence overwhelming as he tugged his tie looser, the fabric whispering against his inked skin. 'Fuck, woman, you’re gonna be the death of me.' He stepped closer, his musky scent—sweat and smoke—enveloping her. One massive hand gripped both her wrists, pinning them gently but firmly, while the other slid around her neck, not to choke but to pull her into him. His lips crashed into hers, rough and desperate, a kiss that wasn’t about pleasure but raw, frustrating need.

Himari gasped against his mouth, silent tears slipping down her cheeks, but she didn’t pull away. Her body trembled, caught between shock and a hunger she couldn’t name. When he finally broke the kiss, his forehead pressed to hers, his breath hot and ragged. 'Rethink this, Himari. Rethink every damn thing you want from me. I ain’t good for you.'

She avoided his gaze, her chest heaving, but the tension between them was electric, a live wire sparking. Kaze’s eyes darkened, a predator’s glint as he muttered, 'Fuck it.' He tugged her toward the executive restroom, the door slamming shut behind them. The air was thick, charged, as he backed her against the cold tile wall, his massive frame caging her. 'You’re gonna regret this, sweetheart,' he growled, but his hands were already sliding down her sides, hungry, searching, as her breath hitched in anticipation of what was to come.
