The grand hall of Olympus was abuzz with the usual chatter and politicking of the gods and goddesses. But as Cady, the light brown-haired, green-eyed goddess of inventions and technology, walked in, the room fell silent. Her sandals clicked against the marble floor, her back straight, her eyes focused on one god in particular.
Hephaestus, the god of fire, was working on a new invention in the corner of the room. He looked up as Cady approached, his dark eyes meeting hers. A small smile played on his lips as he remembered the comfort she had given him during his difficult time with Aphrodite.
But Aphrodite, the goddess of love, had other plans. She sauntered over to Cady, a smug look on her face. “Dear Cady, I never took you for the maternal type,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Cady rolled her eyes, “Aphrodite, I’m surprised you even know what the word ‘maternal’ means. You were too busy cheating on Hephaestus to learn new vocabulary.”
Aphrodite’s face fell, and she stormed off, leaving Cady and Hephaestus alone. Cady turned to him, a serious look on her face. “Hephaestus, I need to talk to you.”
Hephaestus led Cady to a secluded corner of the hall. “What is it, Cady?” he asked, concern etched on his face.
Cady took a deep breath, “Hephaestus, I’m pregnant.”
Hephaestus’s eyes widened in shock, “But how? I thought…”
Cady cut him off, “I know what they all think, but it’s not true. You are not infertile, it was just a rare chance that it didn’t work out before. And I was there for you, I believed in you.”
Hephaestus’s face broke out into a huge grin, “Cady, that’s wonderful news! I can’t wait to be a father.”
Cady smiled, “Neither can I, Hephaestus. Neither can I.”
The two of them embraced, the other gods and goddesses watching in shock and awe. Cady, the strong and controlling goddess, had proven them all wrong.
Cady pulled away from Hephaestus, a mischievous look in her eyes. “Now, let’s go tell Aphrodite.”
Hephaestus chuckled, “Cady, you are always full of surprises.”
The two of them walked back into the hall, hand in hand, ready to face whatever comes their way.
“Hephaestus! Cady!” Aphrodite’s voice rang out, her face twisted in anger. “You can’t be serious.”
Cady raised an eyebrow, “And why not, Aphrodite? I thought you would be happy for us.”
Aphrodite scoffed, “You think I would be happy for you, after what you did? You stole my husband, and now you’re stealing my chance at motherhood.”
Cady shook her head, “Aphrodite, I didn’t steal Hephaestus, he chose me. And as for motherhood, you never wanted it. You were too busy chasing after other gods to bother with children.”
Aphrodite opened her mouth to retort, but Hephaestus stepped forward, “Aphrodite, it’s time you accept the truth. Cady and I are having a child, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Aphrodite’s face turned red with anger, but she said nothing. She turned on her heel and stormed out of the hall, leaving Cady and Hephaestus alone once again.
Cady let out a sigh of relief, “That went better than I expected.”
Hephaestus chuckled, “Cady, you never cease to amaze me.”
Cady smiled, “I try my best.”
The two of them walked back to their secluded corner, their hands still intertwined. Cady leaned her head on Hephaestus’s shoulder, her mind racing with thoughts of the future.
“Hephaestus,” she said, her voice soft.
“Yes, Cady?”
“I can’t wait to start this new chapter of our lives together.”
Hephaestus leaned down and kissed her forehead, “Neither can I, my love. Neither can I.”
As the night went on, the gods and goddesses whispered and gossiped about Cady and Hephaestus’s news. But Cady and Hephaestus paid them no mind. They were lost in their own world, their own love, their own future.
And nothing else mattered.
