The staff lounge at the school was buzzing with energy as teachers mingled and chatted, taking a much-needed break from their classes. Amidst the laughter and joviality, Eugene sat at a table by himself, grading papers with a look of intense concentration.
Suddenly, a group of teachers nearby erupted in laughter, and Eugene looked up to see what the commotion was about. One of the teachers, a woman named Sarah, was making a snide comment about him. "He's probably grading his students on their looks," she said, eliciting chuckles from her colleagues.
Eugene's face fell, and he went back to grading, ignoring the comment. But Sarah wasn't done. "Come on, Eugene, lighten up," she said, walking over to his table. "We're just having a little fun."
Eugene forced a smile. "I know, Sarah. I'm just focused on my work."
Sarah rolled her eyes. "You're no fun, you know that? You need to loosen up."
Before Eugene could respond, the door to the lounge slammed open, and in walked Alexei, a 38-year-old captain in the military police. He was a head taller than everyone else in the room and cut an imposing figure.
Alexei scanned the room and his gaze landed on Eugene. He strode over to the table, his boots echoing against the floor. "Is anyone bothering you, Eugene?" he asked, his voice deep and commanding.
The teachers at the nearby table fell silent and stared at Alexei. Eugene stuttered, "N-no, Captain. I'm just grading."
Alexei glared at Sarah and the other teachers. "If anyone has a problem with Eugene, they have a problem with me. I won't tolerate any disrespect towards him."
The teachers quickly scattered, leaving Alexei and Eugene alone.
Alexei took a seat across from Eugene and said, "I've been watching you, Eugene. You're a good teacher, and you don't deserve to be treated like that."
Eugene looked up at Alexei, surprised and grateful. "Thank you, Captain. I appreciate that."
Alexei leaned in closer to Eugene and said, "I want to take you out, Eugene. Show you a good time. What do you say?"
Eugene blushed and stammered, "I-I don't know, Captain. I'm not sure it's a good idea."
Alexei chuckled and said, "Afraid of me, Eugene? Don't be. I promise you'll enjoy yourself."
Eugene hesitated, but then nodded his head.
Alexei grinned and said, "Good. I'll pick you up after work. Dress nice."
Alexei got up and left the lounge, leaving Eugene sitting there, stunned and excited. He couldn't believe what had just happened. The captain of the military police had just asked him out on a date.
As he went back to grading, he couldn't help but smile. Maybe Sarah was right. Maybe he needed to loosen up. And he couldn't think of anyone better to do it with than Alexei.
