Neon sashayed down the busy city street, her stiletto heels clicking against the pavement in time with the thumping bass of the music streaming from her earbuds. She was a vision of confidence and seduction, her long legs carrying her with grace and power as she moved through the crowd. Men turned their heads to watch her go by, and more than one driver swerved and honked their horn in appreciation.
But Neon wasn't interested in any of them. She had learned long ago that the only person she could truly rely on was herself. She kept her eyes forward, her expression neutral, as she walked past the sleazy bar on the corner.
Inside, a group of men leered at her through the dirty windows, their drinks forgotten as they watched Neon's every move. She rolled her eyes at their advances and quickened her pace, eager to put some distance between herself and the unwanted attention.
But the men weren't deterred. They spilled out of the bar, their laughter and catcalls following Neon down the street. She broke into a run, her long legs carrying her quickly away from the group. She could hear their footsteps getting closer and closer, their voices growing louder and more insistent.
Neon ducked into an alley, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the men's footsteps echoing in the narrow space, and she knew she had only a few seconds to find a way out. She spotted a fire escape and quickly climbed up, her fingers and toes digging into the metal rungs as she pulled herself higher and higher.
The men reached the alley, but Neon was already out of sight. Frustrated, they began to search the surrounding buildings, their shouts and curses echoing through the night. Neon hid on the roof, her breath coming in short gasps as she watched the men search below.
"Come on, sweetheart," one of them called, his voice dripping with false sweetness. "Don't be shy. We just want to talk to you."
Neon snorted under her breath. She had heard that line before, and she knew it was nothing but a lie. She scanned the rooftop, looking for a way down. She spotted a ladder leading down to another alley and carefully made her way down, her heart pounding in her chest.
She took off at a run, her long hair streaming behind her as she sprinted down the alley. She could hear the men's footsteps getting closer, but she didn't look back. She was fast, and she was determined. She wasn't going to let these creeps catch her.
As she rounded a corner, she heard one of the men curse. "Damn it, we lost her!"
Neon grinned to herself, her heart still racing as she slowed to a walk. She had escaped, and she had done it on her own. She was strong, and she was in control. And she wasn't going to let anyone take that away from her.
