Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can

Chapter 1: Shadows and Sin

The bass pulsed through the dimly lit club, a heartbeat of sin and secrets, as Athena Black leaned against the bar, her red silk dress clinging to her hourglass frame like a lover’s desperate touch. The fabric shimmered under the neon lights, daring every eye in the room to linger. She sipped her whiskey, the burn a familiar friend, her violet eyes scanning the crowd with the precision of a predator. Two years of hiding, of blending into the mundane life of New York, and yet tonight, something felt... off. Like a shadow had crept too close.

Beside her, some forgettable man—Mark, Mike, who cared?—droned on about his tech startup, his hand inching toward her thigh. Athena’s lips curled into a smirk, sharp as a blade. 'Touch me, and you’ll lose more than your pride, sweetheart,' she purred, her voice low and laced with venom. The man froze, his laugh nervous, before he muttered an excuse and scurried off into the crowd. Good boy.

She rolled her shoulders, the weight of her past a constant ghost, and turned to order another drink. That’s when she felt it—the weight of a gaze, heavy and unrelenting, burning into her from across the room. Her instincts, honed from years as a sniper for the Italian mob, screamed danger. She didn’t flinch, didn’t falter, but her fingers tightened around her glass as she casually glanced toward the VIP balcony.

There he was. Vincenzo Romano. The son of her late boss, now the king of an empire built on blood and shadows. Six-foot-five of pure, unadulterated sin, his golden skin etched with tattoos that snaked from his neck to his knuckles, his black hair tousled just enough to look like he’d rolled out of bed—or someone else’s. His stormy grey eyes locked on hers, a predator recognizing his equal. And damn if he didn’t look like he wanted to devour her whole.

Athena’s pulse quickened, but she masked it with a slow, taunting smile. She raised her glass in a mock toast, her gaze never wavering. 'Well, well, if it isn’t the devil himself,' she muttered under her breath, knowing he couldn’t hear her but feeling the weight of his obsession all the same. She’d heard whispers of him searching for her these past two years. She just hadn’t expected him to find her in his own den of vice.

Vincenzo descended the stairs, his presence parting the crowd like a blade through silk. Every step was deliberate, his tailored black suit hugging his broad shoulders, screaming power and danger. He stopped mere inches from her, the scent of his cologne—dark, spicy, intoxicating—invading her space. 'Athena Black,' he drawled, his voice a low growl that sent an unwanted shiver down her spine. 'You’ve been a very hard woman to catch.'

She arched a brow, unfazed, her smirk cutting. 'And you’ve been a very desperate man, Romano. Stalking doesn’t suit you. Or does it?' Her words were a challenge, a dare, and she saw the flicker of heat in his eyes, the way his jaw tightened.

'Two years,' he said, stepping closer, his breath hot against her ear as he leaned in. 'Two fucking years I’ve hunted for you, and here you are, in my club, wearing that dress like you knew I’d be watching. Tell me, cara, did you miss me?'

Athena laughed, sharp and cold, tilting her head to meet his gaze head-on. 'Miss you? I don’t even think about you, Vincenzo. I left your world behind. Or did you forget that I’m not your pawn anymore?' She pushed off the bar, her body brushing against his as she stepped past, deliberate and teasing. 'If you want to play, you’ll have to catch me first.'

His hand shot out, gripping her wrist—not hard, but firm enough to stop her. Electricity crackled between them, raw and dangerous. 'Oh, I’ll catch you,' he promised, his voice dripping with dark intent. 'And when I do, you’ll beg for more than just freedom.'

Her violet eyes flashed with defiance, but beneath it, a spark of something hotter, hungrier. She yanked her wrist free, her lips curling into a wicked grin. 'Dream on, Romano. I don’t beg for anyone.'

But as she sauntered toward the dance floor, the heat of his stare burning into her back, Athena knew this game was far from over. Her body was already betraying her, a flush creeping up her neck, her pulse racing with a need she refused to name. She could feel him behind her, closing in, the air thick with unspoken promises. And as the music swelled, bodies pressing close around them, she knew the night was about to ignite.
