The family living room was a sanctuary, filled with the scent of burning incense and the soft glow of sunlight filtering through the curtains. It was a space that beckoned you to sink into its embrace, to forget the world outside and lose yourself in the warmth of family. But today, the air was thick with tension, and even the incense couldn't mask the scent of unease.
Solace entered the room, immediately sensing the tension. He avoided eye contact with his parents, instead focusing on the intricate patterns of the rug beneath his feet. He knew he couldn't avoid the question much longer, but he was hoping for a reprieve, a chance to gather his thoughts and figure out how to explain himself.
But Brigitte, the goddess of fun and joy, was not one to be ignored. Her voice was light and playful, but there was a hint of steel beneath the surface. "Solace, my dear, where were you?"
Solace took a deep breath, knowing he couldn't avoid the question any longer. "I was with Nico," he admitted, finally meeting his parents' gazes.
Apollo, Solace's father and the god of the sun, raised an eyebrow. "But you know we're fine with you hanging out with Nico. So what were you two really doing?"
Solace hesitated, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Okay, if I tell you, you can't be mad."
Brigitte and Apollo exchanged a glance, a silent agreement passing between them. "We promise," Brigitte said, her voice softening.
Solace took another deep breath, then blurting out, "We were exploring the Underworld."
Apollo's eyes widened in shock. "The Underworld? But that's dangerous! And you know I would have smelled smoke or alcohol on you if you had been doing that."
Solace shook his head. "No, we weren't smoking or drinking. We were just... exploring."
Brigitte's eyes twinkled with mischief. "And what exactly did you find down there?"
Solace's cheeks flushed, a sure sign that he was hiding something. "Just... some cool rocks and stuff," he mumbled.
Apollo crossed his arms, his expression stern. "Solace, you know we only want what's best for you. And exploring the Underworld is not exactly what we had in mind."
Solace looked down at his feet, his voice barely above a whisper. "I know, but it was just so cool down there. And Nico was really nice and helpful."
Brigitte's expression softened. "I'm glad you had a good time, Solace. But next time, please be honest with us. We can't protect you if we don't know where you are."
Solace nodded, looking up at his parents with a sheepish grin. "I'm sorry. I won't lie again."
And with that, the tension in the room dissipated, replaced by a sense of understanding and love. Solace may have bent the rules a little, but his strong and controlling mother and direct father had reminded him of the importance of honesty and communication. And as they all settled onto the couch, the conversation turned to lighter topics, filled with laughter and playful insults.
"So, Solace," Brigitte said, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "What kind of 'rocks and stuff' did you find down there?"
Solace rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but smile. "Just some cool crystals and a really old skull. It was pretty gross, but also kind of cool."
Apollo shook his head, but there was a smile on his face. "You're something else, Solace. But I'm glad you're safe."
And as they continued to talk, the warmth of the living room enveloped them, and for a moment, they were just a family, sharing stories and laughter in the cozy embrace of their home.
