Cheerful Distractions

Cheerful Distractions

Chapter 1: A Game of Heat

The sun blazed down on the community park, a golden haze shimmering over the grass as 22-year-old Mia strutted toward the event area, her cheerleading uniform hugging every curve of her athletic frame. Her crimson skirt swished with each confident step, the tight top barely containing the bounce of her chest. She’d just come from practice, too rushed to change, and frankly, she didn’t care. After her messy breakup with that idiot Jake two weeks ago, she was a storm of pent-up frustration and raw emotion. Today, though, she was determined to channel it into something good—volunteering for this kids’ event might just be the distraction she needed.

As she approached the gaggle of children running wild near the picnic tables, her sharp green eyes zeroed in on a shy 12-year-old boy, Ethan, sitting alone on a bench, kicking at the dirt. His mop of brown hair fell over his eyes, and he looked as lost as she felt. Mia’s heart tugged, but she shoved the sentiment aside. No wallowing. Not today. She clapped her hands, her voice ringing out like a coach’s whistle. 'Alright, rugrats! Who’s up for a game? I’m thinking a scavenger hunt—winner gets bragging rights and a candy stash!' The kids cheered, but Ethan barely looked up. Mia sauntered over, crouching down to his level, her skirt riding up just enough to flash a glimpse of toned thigh. 'Hey, kiddo, you in or what? I could use a sharp mind on my team.'

Ethan’s cheeks flushed, but he mumbled a quiet, 'Sure.' Mia grinned, ruffling his hair. 'That’s the spirit. Stick with me, champ. I’m a winner.' Her tone was playful, but there was a fire in her eyes—a need to prove something, even if just to herself. As the game kicked off, Mia’s energy was infectious, barking orders and laughing with the kids, her long legs darting across the field. But her mind kept wandering, her body restless. She caught herself scanning the park, not for clues, but for something—someone—to ignite the spark she’d been missing.

That’s when she saw him. Leaning against a tree near the edge of the park, arms crossed, was Ryan, the event coordinator and a grad student she’d met once before. Six feet of pure muscle, with a smirk that could melt steel. His dark eyes locked on her, tracking every move as she led the kids. Mia felt a jolt, heat pooling low in her belly. She straightened, tossing her ponytail over her shoulder, and shot him a look that said, *I see you watching.* Ryan pushed off the tree, strolling over with a lazy swagger. 'Didn’t know cheerleaders moonlighted as babysitters,' he drawled, voice low and teasing.

Mia smirked, planting a hand on her hip. 'And I didn’t know coordinators were too lazy to help. What, you just here to ogle?' Ryan’s laugh was a deep rumble, his gaze dipping to her legs before snapping back to her face. 'Guilty as charged. But I’m more than happy to… assist, if you’ve got the stamina.' The double entendre hung heavy between them, and Mia’s pulse kicked up a notch. She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a husky whisper. 'Oh, I’ve got stamina, big guy. Question is, can you keep up?'

The air crackled, thick with unspoken promises. Mia’s skin prickled as Ryan’s eyes darkened, his breath hitching just enough to betray his cool exterior. She knew the kids were nearby, knew she should focus, but the ache in her core was screaming louder. 'Meet me by the equipment shed in ten,' she challenged, her tone daring him to refuse. Ryan’s smirk widened. 'Make it five. I’m not a patient man.'

As Mia turned back to the kids, her mind was already racing ahead, imagining the shed’s shadowed corner, the heat of his hands, the way she’d take control and make him beg for more. Her body was buzzing, horny and restless, and she knew this game was about to get a whole lot dirtier.
