Crowning Jewel: A Homegrown Miracle of Life (and Pants)

Chapter One: Alone and Unprepared

The bathroom tile was cold against my skin as I sat, naked and sweating, on the toilet. I groaned and cursed, my hands gripping the edges of the seat as another contraction ripped through my body.

"Come on, you little shit," I muttered, my eyes clenched shut. "You'd better be on your way, because I am not doing this alone."

But even as I spoke the words, I knew that was exactly what was happening. My partner was nowhere to be found, and I was alone in our bathroom, about to become a mother.

I took a deep breath and reached down, feeling the baby's head beginning to crown. My eyes widened in shock as I felt the slippery scalp beneath my fingers.

"You've got to be kidding me," I grunted, my voice tight with pain. "You're really doing this to me?"

I muttered a string of insults at my absent partner, my anger and fear mixing together in a toxic cocktail. But there was no one to hear me, no one to help me through this. It was just me and the baby, alone in our bathroom.

With one final push, the baby's head emerged, followed by the shoulders and body. I caught the baby in my arms, my heart racing as I looked down at the tiny, slippery form.

"Well, hello there, little one," I murmured, my voice shaking. "You sure know how to make an entrance."

I carefully stood up, still holding the baby close to my chest. I took a moment to gather my strength before cleaning up and calling for help. I wrapped the baby in a towel and sat back down on the toilet, still in shock.

"I can't believe I just did that," I whispered, my voice barely above a whisper.

I looked down at the baby, my heart swelling with love and fear. I carefully stood up again and made my way to the phone, still holding the baby close.

"Hello, operator?" I said, my voice steady despite the circumstances. "I need an ambulance. I just had a baby...alone."

I heard the operator's voice waver, and I reassured her. "It's okay. We're both okay."

I hung up the phone and took a deep breath. I looked down at the baby again, my heart swelling with love.

"Welcome to the world, little one," I murmured, my voice thick with emotion. "I'm glad you're here."

I heard sirens in the distance and felt a sense of relief. I murmured, "Help is on the way."

I took one last look at myself in the mirror, still in disbelief. I whispered, "I did it. I brought you into this world, all on my own."
