Alexander sat at his desk, the tickets to a far-off country burning a hole in his pocket. He couldn’t believe he was actually going to do it. The excitement was intoxicating, but so was the guilt.
He got up from his chair and paced around the room, trying to talk himself out of his desires. He was a father, for god’s sake. He shouldn’t be feeling this way. But the allure of the unknown was too strong to resist.
He opened the door to his daughter’s room, peeking in to see her playing with her dolls. She was the spitting image of her mother, with her blonde hair and blue eyes. She looked up at him, her expression curious.
“Daddy, what are you doing?” she asked, her voice filled with innocence.
He approached her, feeling a mix of love and lust. He reached out to touch her hair, but she swatted his hand away.
“Daddy, I’m playing. Don’t bother me,” she said, her tone firm.
He felt a twinge of annoyance, but it quickly turned to amusement. He loved her feisty spirit. He sat down on the floor next to her, trying to engage in her play.
“Daddy, you’re so weird,” she said, rolling her eyes.
He laughed and playfully insulted her. “You’re the weird one, with your dolls and tea parties.”
She stuck her tongue out at him and continued playing, seemingly oblivious to his inner turmoil. He watched her for a few more minutes, then got up and left the room, closing the door behind him.
He returned to his office and stared at the tickets again. There was no turning back now. He packed a small bag, making sure to include a few of his daughter’s toys. He knew she would be upset, but he hoped it would help her feel more comfortable in their new surroundings.
As he drove away from his home, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of regret and sadness. He knew he was making a mistake, but he couldn’t turn back now. He arrived at the airport, checked in for his flight, and took a deep breath. He was about to embark on a journey that would change his life forever.
And as he boarded the plane, he couldn’t help but wonder if he would ever see his daughter again. But the thought was fleeting, replaced by the excitement of the unknown. He closed his eyes and let the plane take him away, hoping that he would find the answers he was looking for.
