Alexander sat at his desk, the tickets to a far-off country burning a hole in his pocket. He couldn’t believe he was actually going to do it. The excitement was overwhelming, but so was the guilt. How could he even consider leaving his daughter behind?
He got up and paced around the room, trying to talk himself out of his desires. But the temptation was too strong. He couldn’t resist the call of adventure, the lure of the unknown.
He opened the door to his daughter’s room, peeking in to see her playing with her dolls. She looked so innocent, so carefree. Part of him wanted to stay and watch her, to soak up her joy and innocence. But the other part of him, the part that craved excitement and danger, was already planning his escape.
He hesitated, but the temptation was too strong. He entered the room, closing the door behind him.
“Daddy, what are you doing here?” his daughter asked, looking up at him with a mixture of confusion and curiosity.
Alexander tried to act normal, but his nerves were showing. “I just wanted to see what you were doing, sweetheart,” he said, forcing a smile.
She went back to playing with her dolls, unaware of the thoughts running through her father’s mind. Alexander took a deep breath and approached his daughter. She looked up at him again, this time with a hint of suspicion.
“Daddy, what’s wrong?” she asked.
He tried to brush it off, but his voice was shaking. “Nothing, honey. I just...I need to tell you something.”
She set her dolls aside, giving him her full attention. “What is it, Daddy?”
Alexander took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. “I...I’m leaving for a little while. I have to go on a trip.”
His daughter’s face fell. “But why, Daddy? Why do you have to go?”
He hesitated, trying to come up with an excuse. “I...I have some important business to take care of. It’s for work.”
She looked at him, her eyes welling up with tears. “But what about me, Daddy? Who’s going to take care of me?”
Alexander felt a pang of guilt, but his desires were too strong. “You’ll be fine, honey. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”
She started to cry, begging him not to leave. He tried to comfort her, but his mind was already made up. He picked up his tickets, giving his daughter one last look before he left.
She watched him go, her heart breaking as she realized that her father’s secret desires were stronger than his love for her.
“Goodbye, sweetheart,” Alexander said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll be back before you know it.”
But even as he spoke the words, he knew they weren’t true. He was leaving for good, and there was nothing his daughter could do to stop him.
As he walked out the door, Alexander couldn’t help but feel a twinge of regret. But the excitement of his upcoming adventure was too strong to resist. He was leaving, and there was no turning back.
