Chapter 1: Sparks in the Shadows
The village of Eldergrove sat nestled in a valley of whispering pines, a place where the air was thick with secrets and the women were forged from iron. They were not damsels, not prey, but warriors in their own right—farmers, hunters, and keepers of ancient lore. Yet, a shadow had fallen over their haven. Raiders, driven by lust and cruelty, had begun to stalk the outskirts, their intentions as vile as the mud beneath their boots. But the women of Eldergrove were not about to kneel.
Kaelia, the village’s fiercest hunter, stood at the edge of the forest, her bow slung over her shoulder, her dark eyes scanning the horizon. Her raven hair was tied back, revealing a scar that slashed across her cheek—a memento from a wolf she’d slain bare-handed. Beside her was Maris, the blacksmith’s daughter, her muscular arms crossed, a smirk playing on her lips as she toyed with a dagger.
‘So, these bastards think they can just waltz in and take what they want?’ Maris spat, her voice dripping with venom. ‘I’d like to see them try. I’ll carve their balls off before they can even blink.’
Kaelia chuckled, a low, dangerous sound. ‘Oh, they’ll try, Maris. And when they do, I’ll make sure they regret ever stepping foot in Eldergrove. But we need to be smart. We lure them in, make them think they’ve won.’
Maris raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening. ‘You mean play the bait? I’m not some trembling maiden, Kaelia. If I’m luring, I’m doing it with a blade in hand and a smile on my face.’
‘Exactly,’ Kaelia replied, her gaze smoldering with intent. ‘We give them a taste of what they crave, then turn their hunger into their downfall.’
That night, under a moonless sky, the plan was set. Kaelia and Maris positioned themselves near the village square, their laughter echoing through the stillness, a deliberate taunt to draw the raiders out. The air was electric, charged with danger and something else—something primal. As they waited, Maris leaned close, her breath hot against Kaelia’s ear.
‘You know, if we’re gonna play this game, we might as well enjoy it,’ she purred, her hand brushing against Kaelia’s thigh. ‘Gets the blood pumping, doesn’t it? All this waiting, knowing what’s coming.’
Kaelia’s lips curled into a wicked grin, her voice a husky whisper. ‘Careful, Maris. You keep talking like that, and I might forget we’ve got company to deal with. I’m already feeling a different kind of heat.’
Maris laughed, sharp and bold. ‘Oh, I’m counting on it. Let’s make these bastards wait while we have our fun.’
Their banter was cut short by the rustle of leaves, the heavy tread of boots. The raiders were close. But so was the fire between Kaelia and Maris, a blaze that refused to be doused. As their eyes locked, the tension snapped like a taut bowstring. Kaelia grabbed Maris by the waist, pulling her close, their lips crashing together in a fierce, hungry kiss. Hands roamed, desperate and bold, as they stumbled back against a tree, the bark rough against their skin.
‘You’re gonna make me lose focus,’ Kaelia growled, her fingers digging into Maris’s hips, feeling the heat radiating from her.
‘Good,’ Maris shot back, her voice dripping with challenge. ‘I want you hard and ready for more than just a fight. Let’s show these pricks what real power looks like.’
Their breaths came fast, panting, as they pressed closer, the world narrowing to the pulse of their desire. Kaelia’s hand slid lower, teasing, while Maris’s smirk turned feral, her own touch bold and unapologetic. They were sweating now, the air thick with the scent of their need, a promise of something explosive just out of reach—until the first shout of the raiders shattered the moment, dragging them back to the battle ahead.
But the fire was lit, and it would not be extinguished.
