Desire in the Deadlands: A Zombie Apocalypse Romance

Desire in the Deadlands: A Zombie Apocalypse Romance

Chapter 1: Whispers in the Wasteland

Deltyn trudged through the overgrown ruins of Pleasant Hope, Missouri, his blond messy fringe with natural curls plastered to his forehead with sweat. At just thirteen, the zombie apocalypse had already hardened him, his wiry frame tense as he scanned the desolate streets for danger. The world had gone to hell, but today, his 8th-grade crew was holed up in an abandoned diner, plotting their next move. The air was thick with tension—and something else. Something primal.

Brooklyn, the adopted mean girl with a sharp tongue and sharper wit, leaned against the counter, her dark eyes glinting with mischief. 'So, Deltyn, you gonna be our fearless leader today, or are we just waiting for you to trip over your own feet again?' Her tone was mocking, but there was a teasing warmth beneath it, a challenge that made his pulse quicken.

'Keep talking, Brooklyn. Maybe I’ll let the next zombie take a bite outta that smart mouth,' Deltyn shot back, a smirk tugging at his lips. Their banter was a dance, a push and pull that always left him oddly breathless.

Hailee, the ever-agreeable yet fierce fighter, chuckled from her spot by the window, her thumbs-up gesture a constant in their grim reality. 'Play nice, you two. We’ve got enough enemies outside without starting a war in here.' Her voice was steady, but her gaze lingered on Deltyn a little too long, a silent strength in her hazel eyes that made his chest tighten.

Camilla, the gooner girl who seemed to live in her own lust-fueled world, barely looked up from her corner booth, her fingers tracing patterns on the table as if lost in some forbidden fantasy. 'Y’all are boring me to death. Can we skip to the part where we find something worth getting hot over?' Her voice was a low purr, and Deltyn felt an unexpected heat creep up his neck at her blatant disregard for subtlety.

Sofie, the smart but not nerdy one, adjusted her glasses and rolled her eyes. 'Camilla, not everything is about getting your kicks. Some of us are trying to survive.' But even her cool logic couldn’t hide the way her lips twitched when Deltyn caught her eye, a shared understanding sparking between them.

The diner felt smaller with every passing second, the air charged with unspoken desires amidst the decay of their world. Deltyn’s gaze flicked to Brooklyn again, her taunting smile igniting something reckless in him. He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. 'You wanna keep testing me, Brook? ‘Cause I’m about two seconds from shutting you up myself.'

Her eyes widened, but she didn’t back down, her own voice dripping with defiance. 'Oh, try me, Deltyn. I dare you.'

The space between them crackled, his heart pounding as he noticed the way her breath hitched. Hailee’s watchful stare burned into him, Sofie’s quiet intensity a palpable force, and Camilla’s suggestive hum in the background only fanned the flames. He was hard, the tension coiling tight in his core, and he knew Brooklyn could see it in his eyes. Her lips parted, a challenge and an invitation, as they stood mere inches apart. The world outside might be dead, but in here, every nerve in his body was alive, aching, and ready to explode.

And then, with a growl of frustration and need, he closed the distance, his hands reaching for her as the diner faded into a haze of raw, untamed heat…
