Chapter 1: Whispers in the Dark
The air inside the derelict alien ship was thick with the scent of decay and forgotten tech, a metallic tang that clung to the back of their throats. The woman, sharp-eyed and fierce, knelt before a cracked console, her fingers dancing over alien glyphs with a hacker’s precision. Her mid-20s frame was taut with focus, her dark hair pulled back in a messy knot, revealing the determined set of her jaw. Her partner, a lean man with a restless energy, hovered nearby, his boots scuffing against the grimy floor.
‘Babe, you sure you’ve got this?’ he asked, his voice a low rumble, laced with both concern and a teasing edge. ‘I mean, I could just smash it open. Save us the headache.’
She didn’t look up, her lips curling into a smirk. ‘Smash it? With what, your ego? I’ve got this, hotshot. Now go play explorer or something. I need silence, not your hovering.’
He chuckled, a sound that echoed eerily in the cavernous ship. ‘Fine, fine. I’ll go sniff around. But if I find some alien treasure, I’m not sharing.’
‘As if you’d know treasure from trash,’ she shot back, her tone biting but playful. ‘Go on, get lost. And don’t touch anything stupid.’
He gave her a mock salute and wandered off down a shadowy corridor, the dim bioluminescent glow of the ship’s walls casting long, jagged shadows. His curiosity led him to a chamber with a massive glass viewport, its surface clouded with age. He wiped a hand across it, peering through—and froze. On the other side, a monstrous form loomed, its sinewy body a grotesque parody of life, all jagged exoskeleton and dripping maw. An alien, unlike anything he’d ever seen, yet chillingly familiar in its predatory menace.
His breath caught, heart slamming against his ribs. ‘Holy—’ The word died as the creature’s head snapped toward him, its eyes glinting with feral hunger. Before he could move, it lunged, shattering the glass in a spray of shards. He stumbled back, adrenaline spiking, but the beast was on him, claws raking across his chest, a searing pain blooming as blood welled. A sickly sweet toxin sprayed from its maw, hitting his face, and his limbs began to lock, muscles seizing in agonizing paralysis.
With a desperate roar, he managed to grab a jagged piece of debris, driving it into the creature’s throat. Black ichor sprayed as it screeched, collapsing in a twitching heap. He fell to his knees, panting, his body betraying him as the toxin took hold, leaving him slumped against the wall, barely conscious.
Her voice cut through the haze, sharp and urgent. ‘Hey! What the hell was that noise?’ She rounded the corner, her eyes widening as she saw him, bloodied and broken. ‘Oh my God, what happened?’ She dropped beside him, her hands hovering over his wounds, fierce concern etching her features.
‘Alien… dead… can’t move,’ he gasped, his voice a strained whisper. ‘Watch out—’
Her head snapped up, but it was too late. From the shadows, a smaller creature skittered forward, its face a grotesque mask of tendrils and bone. A facehugger, or something worse. It leapt, latching onto her with horrifying speed, its tail coiling tight around her throat. She choked out a curse, her hands clawing at it, but a slower, insidious toxin seeped into her, her movements growing sluggish.
‘You bastard,’ she snarled at the creature, even as her strength waned. ‘Get off me!’ But her voice faltered, her body trembling as the thing’s intent became clear, a sickening violation as it began its horrific purpose. More of them emerged, their skittering claws tearing at her gear, exposing skin as she fought, her defiance burning even as her body betrayed her.
He could only watch, helpless, rage and horror boiling in his chest. Her eyes met his, a flash of raw, unyielding fire amidst the terror. ‘Don’t you dare look away,’ she hissed through gritted teeth. ‘We’re getting out of this. Together.’
But as the creatures closed in, her words hung in the air, a promise teetering on the edge of despair, their fates entwined in the dark heart of the void.
