Chapter 1: Heat of the Night
The hotel room was a sultry cocoon, the air thick with the scent of jasmine and anticipation. Toni, my fierce and unapologetic best friend, lay sprawled on the king-sized bed, her skin flushed with a fever that had hit her like a freight train. Her dark hair clung to her forehead in damp tendrils, and her eyes, usually sharp with mischief, were half-lidded with discomfort. Beside me stood Jace, a man whose rugged charm could melt steel, his jaw tight with concern as he hovered over her.
"Toni, you’re burning up," I said, pressing the back of my hand to her cheek. "We’ve got to cool you down."
She managed a weak smirk, her voice raspy but laced with her signature bite. "If you’re suggesting a strip show, babe, I’m not exactly in the mood to dance."
Jace chuckled, his deep timbre rolling like thunder. "No dancing required, darlin’. But we need to get these clothes off. They’re trapping the heat."
Toni arched a brow, even in her fevered state, her defiance unyielding. "Oh, so now you’re a doctor? Fine, but don’t get any funny ideas, Jace. I’m still in charge here."
I bit back a laugh as Jace’s hands hesitated at the hem of her tank top. "Wouldn’t dream of it," he quipped, though the glint in his hazel eyes suggested otherwise. With a nod from Toni, he peeled the fabric away, revealing her glistening skin, her curves unapologetically on display. I couldn’t help but admire her strength, even now, as she lay bare and vulnerable yet somehow still commanding the room.
"Suppository’s next," Jace said, his tone shifting to practical as he rummaged through the first-aid kit. "It’ll bring the fever down faster."
Toni groaned, rolling her eyes. "You’ve got to be kidding me. What’s next, a full-body massage?"
"Only if you ask nicely," I teased, handing Jace the small packet. My own pulse quickened, the air charged with an unspoken tension as he prepared the treatment. Toni’s gaze flicked to mine, a spark of her usual fire returning.
"Don’t think this means I owe you two anything," she muttered, shifting onto her side with a wince. "I’m still the boss of this operation."
"Always," Jace replied, his voice a low growl as he applied the suppository with surprising gentleness. Once done, he grabbed a bottle of oil from the bedside table. "This’ll help with the aches. You good with that?"
Toni’s lips curled into a sly grin. "Only if you make it worth my while, big guy."
I watched, my breath catching, as Jace poured the oil into his palms, warming it before gliding his hands over Toni’s naked back. Her skin shimmered under the dim light, and a soft moan escaped her lips, not of pain but of relief—and something deeper. The room seemed to shrink, the heat between us all rising as his hands moved lower, kneading the tension from her body.
"Damn, Jace, you’ve got magic fingers," Toni purred, her voice gaining strength. "Careful, or I might just forget I’m sick."
He smirked, his touch lingering at the curve of her ass. "Wouldn’t want that. Or would we?"
My own body responded, a flush creeping up my neck as I caught Toni’s eye. She winked, her fevered haze giving way to something hungry. "Don’t just stand there gawking," she said to me, her tone sharp and inviting. "Get over here. I’m not the only one who needs to cool off."
I stepped closer, my heart pounding, the air electric with unspoken promises. Jace’s hands paused, his gaze locking with mine, a silent question hanging between us. Toni’s breath hitched, her body arching slightly under his touch, and I knew we were teetering on the edge of something explosive. The fever wasn’t just in her—it was in all of us, a raw, pulsing need ready to ignite.
