The campfire at Camp Artemis crackled and popped, illuminating the faces of the young campers gathered around it. Ellie, a 14-year-old camp counselor with golden blonde hair and piercing blue eyes, led the group in a raucous song, her voice strong and clear above the rest. She watched with satisfaction as the campers joined in, their shyness and fear of the night giving way to the joy of the moment.
All except for one. Bee, the youngest of the campers, sat stiffly on a log, her eyes wide with fear and uncertainty. Ellie, noticing her discomfort, smiled warmly and patted the space next to her.
"Hey, Bee. Why don't you come sit on my lap? I promise I won't bite."
Bee hesitated for a moment, then scooted over to Ellie, who wrapped her arms around the girl and pulled her close.
"You okay, Bee?" Ellie asked softly.
Bee nodded, but Ellie could feel her trembling. She decided a distraction was in order.
"Hey, have I ever told you guys the story of my first night at camp?" Ellie asked, grinning. The campers leaned in, eager to hear.
"I was so scared, let me tell you. I had never been away from home before, and I missed my mom and dad something fierce. But then, something amazing happened. I was walking through the woods, feeling sorry for myself, when I saw a flame appear above my head. Just like that!" Ellie snapped her fingers, and the campers gasped.
"It was the symbol of Hestia, the goddess of home, hearth, and family. And then, I heard this booming voice echo through the camp, announcing that I was Hestia's daughter. I was so surprised, I didn't know what to do. I mean, Hestia is known for taking a vow of chastity, so I didn't think she was the type to have kids."
Ellie rolled her eyes, and the campers laughed.
"Anyway, the camp director, a strong and controlling woman named Diana, came over and congratulated me. She welcomed me to the 'family' of demigods and told me all about my new powers and the responsibilities that came with being a demigod."
Ellie smiled at the memory, then turned to Bee.
"Bee, you know what's funny? I was about your age when it happened to me. And now, I'm here, helping to take care of all of you. It's kind of cool, isn't it?"
Bee nodded, her fear replaced with awe.
"Ellie, can you teach me how to start a fire like you did?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ellie chuckled. "Of course, Bee. But first, let me tell you something important. Fire is a powerful tool, but it can also be dangerous if not handled properly. You have to be in control at all times, okay?"
Bee nodded solemnly, and Ellie showed her how to start a fire using dry leaves and a flint. The campers watched in fascination as the flames flickered to life, then cheered when Bee successfully started her own fire.
"Great job, Bee!" Ellie said, giving her a high-five. "Now, who's ready for some marshmallows and s'mores?"
The campers cheered, and Ellie distributed the ingredients. As they roasted marshmallows and made s'mores, Ellie listened to their stories of being claimed by their godly parents. She was touched by their bravery and resilience, and felt a sense of belonging and purpose.
As the night came to an end, Ellie reflected on her new identity as a demigod. She knew there would be challenges and opportunities ahead, but she was ready for them. And most importantly, she had a family, a group of strong and controlling women who would support her and help her grow.
And with that thought, Ellie leaned back against a tree, feeling content and at peace. The fire crackled and popped, casting a warm glow over the camp. And in that moment, Ellie knew that she was exactly where she was meant to be.
