Chapter 1: The New Hire
Linda adjusted her sleek, black blazer in the mirror, her sharp green eyes scanning every detail of her commanding presence. At 42, she ran her marketing firm with an iron grip and a smile that could disarm or destroy. Today, she was interviewing Jake, the son of her old college friend, for an assistant position. She’d promised to give him a shot, but she wasn’t about to hand him anything on a silver platter.
The door swung open, and in walked Jake—tall, broad-shouldered, with a cocky grin that screamed trouble. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his tailored suit hugged his frame just enough to hint at the muscle beneath. Linda’s lips twitched into a smirk. This kid thought he could charm his way in.
“Jake, nice to see you,” she said, her voice smooth as velvet, gesturing to the chair across her glass-topped desk. “Let’s skip the pleasantries. Why should I hire you when I’ve got a stack of resumes from people twice as qualified?”
Jake leaned back, unfazed, his blue eyes locking with hers. “Because I’m not just a resume, Linda. I’m hungry, adaptable, and I don’t scare easy. Plus, I’ve heard you’re a hard-ass to work for. I like a challenge.”
Her brow arched, a spark of amusement flickering in her gaze. “Oh, do you now? Careful, kid. I chew up cocky little boys like you for breakfast.”
He chuckled, low and dangerous. “Good thing I’m not a little boy then. Test me. I’ll prove I can keep up.”
Linda crossed her legs, the slit in her pencil skirt revealing just a hint of thigh. She caught the way his eyes flicked down for a split second before returning to her face. Gotcha, she thought. “Fine. You start tomorrow. But if you can’t handle the heat, don’t cry to your mom when I send you packing.”
“Deal,” Jake shot back, standing to shake her hand. His grip was firm, lingering just a beat too long. “I’ll handle anything you throw at me. And then some.”
The next day, the office buzzed with tension. Linda had Jake running errands, drafting emails, and shadowing her in meetings. Every time their hands brushed passing a file, every time their eyes met over a strategy board, the air crackled. By late afternoon, they were alone in her corner office, the city skyline glowing through the floor-to-ceiling windows as they reviewed a campaign pitch.
“You’ve got a typo here,” Jake pointed out, leaning over her shoulder to tap the screen. His breath grazed her neck, sending an unexpected shiver down her spine.
Linda turned her head slightly, their faces inches apart. “You’re bold, aren’t you? Most people don’t correct me on day one.”
“Most people aren’t me,” he replied, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. “And I think you like bold.”
Her lips curled into a predatory smile. “You’ve got no idea what I like, Jake. But keep pushing, and you might find out.”
He didn’t back down, his gaze burning into hers. “Oh, I’m pushing. Question is, are you gonna push back?”
The challenge hung between them, heavy and electric. Linda stood, her heels clicking as she rounded the desk to face him. She was close now, close enough to smell the faint cedar of his cologne, to see the way his jaw tightened with restraint. Her hand brushed against his chest as she straightened his tie, her touch deliberate.
“Don’t start something you can’t finish,” she warned, her voice a low purr.
Jake’s hand caught her wrist, his grip firm but not forceful. “I always finish what I start, Linda. Try me.”
Her pulse raced, heat pooling low in her belly. She could feel the hard lines of his body through his shirt, the raw energy radiating off him. This wasn’t just a game anymore. She tilted her head, lips hovering near his. “Last chance to back off, kid.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he growled, and in that moment, the dam broke. Their mouths crashed together, hungry and fierce, her hands fisting in his shirt as his slid down to grip her hips. The desk was right there, and she knew exactly where this was headed—hard, fast, and utterly forbidden.
