Forbidden Flames

Chapter 1: Sparks in the Shadows

The old family cabin in the woods had always been a sanctuary for Lila and Ethan, a place where the world’s rules seemed to blur under the weight of pine-scented air and whispered secrets. Now, at 28 and 30, they weren’t kids anymore, but the tension between them had grown into something dangerous, something neither could name until tonight. The fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting golden flickers across Lila’s sharp cheekbones as she leaned against the worn leather couch, a glass of whiskey in her hand.

“You’ve been staring at me all night, Ethan,” she said, her voice a low, teasing purr. “What’s going on in that head of yours? Afraid I’ll bite?”

Ethan, sprawled in the armchair across from her, smirked, his dark eyes glinting with something reckless. “Maybe I’m hoping you will. Ever think of that, sis?”

Lila’s laugh was sharp, cutting through the quiet like a blade. “Oh, don’t start with that ‘sis’ bullshit. We’re past playing house, aren’t we? Or are you still pretending you don’t feel this… whatever the hell this is?” She gestured between them, her gaze locking with his, daring him to look away.

He didn’t. Instead, he leaned forward, elbows on his knees, the muscles in his forearms flexing under the rolled-up sleeves of his flannel. “I feel it. Have for years. But you’re the one who keeps dancing around it, Lila. One minute you’re all fire, the next you’re ice. Pick a damn lane.”

She set her glass down with a deliberate clink, rising to her feet in a fluid motion that made Ethan’s breath catch. Her jeans hugged every curve, and the thin tank top she wore left little to the imagination as she stalked toward him. “Fine. Let’s stop dancing. You want to know what I’m thinking? I’m thinking I’m tired of pretending I don’t want you. Tired of acting like I don’t notice how you look at me—like you’re starving.”

Ethan stood, meeting her halfway, their bodies inches apart now. The heat between them was palpable, a living thing that pulsed with every ragged breath. “And what if I am?” he shot back, his voice rough. “What if I’ve been hard for you since the second we got here, imagining what it’d be like to finally have you?”

Lila’s lips curled into a wicked smile, her hand reaching up to trace the line of his jaw, her touch electric. “Then stop imagining, big brother. I’m right here. But don’t think for a second I’m gonna make this easy. You want me? Earn it.”

Her words were a challenge, a gauntlet thrown down, and Ethan’s eyes darkened with raw, unfiltered desire. He grabbed her wrist, pulling her closer until their bodies pressed together, the heat of her skin searing through his shirt. “Oh, I’ll earn it,” he growled. “I’ll have you sweating, panting, begging for more before I’m done.”

Lila’s laugh was breathless, her free hand sliding down his chest, fingers curling into his belt. “Big talk. Let’s see if you can back it up. I’m already wet just thinking about how this is gonna go down.”

Their lips were a heartbeat away from crashing together, the air thick with the promise of something forbidden and explosive. Ethan’s hand slid to her hip, gripping tight, while Lila’s nails dug into his skin, a silent dare. The cabin seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the moment they’d cross the line they’d been toeing for far too long.
