Forbidden Flames

**Chapter 1: The Unspoken Hunger**

I laid little Jeremy down in his crib, his tiny chest rising and falling with the soft rhythm of sleep. My heart thundered in my chest, a wild drumbeat I couldn’t ignore. I stepped back, running a trembling hand through my tousled hair, trying to shake off the storm brewing deep inside me. But it was no use. The heat, the ache—it was consuming me. I glanced down at him, my sweet son, sleeping so peacefully, and yet, my body betrayed me. It wasn’t about him, not in that way, but the raw reminder of creation, of life, of the passion that had brought him into this world. It stirred something primal, something I’d buried for far too long.

I turned away, my breath hitching, and nearly collided with a hard chest. Ethan. My husband’s best friend, who’d been staying with us for the past week. His dark eyes locked onto mine, a knowing smirk curling his lips. He’d caught me in this vulnerable moment, and damn if he didn’t look like he enjoyed it.

“Trouble sleeping, Mara?” His voice was low, a velvet caress that sent a shiver down my spine. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, his gaze raking over me like I was a puzzle he was dying to solve.

I squared my shoulders, refusing to let him see me falter. “Just checking on Jeremy. What’s your excuse for lurking around at midnight?”

He chuckled, stepping closer, the heat of his body radiating against mine. “Maybe I’m just drawn to trouble. And you, darling, look like a whole lot of it right now.”

I rolled my eyes, but my pulse quickened. “Flattery won’t get you anywhere, Ethan. I’m not some damsel in distress.”

“Oh, I know you’re not,” he murmured, his voice dipping lower, dripping with intent. “You’re a goddamn wildfire, and I’ve been itching to get burned.”

My breath caught, but I held my ground, tilting my chin up defiantly. “Careful, Ethan. Play with fire, and you might not like the scars.”

He grinned, a predator’s smile, and closed the distance between us. His hand brushed against my arm, a featherlight touch that ignited every nerve in my body. “I’m counting on it. Tell me, Mara, how long has it been since you let yourself feel something… real?”

I swallowed hard, my resolve wavering under the weight of his stare. “You don’t know what you’re asking for.”

“Don’t I?” His thumb traced a slow circle on my wrist, and I hated how my body responded, a traitor to my mind. “I see it in your eyes. You’re starving for it. And I’m right here, ready to feed that hunger.”

I yanked my arm back, but the space between us felt electric, charged with unspoken need. “You’re crossing a line, Ethan. My husband—”

“Isn’t here,” he cut in, his voice sharp, daring. “And I’m not asking for permission. I’m asking if you’re brave enough to take what you want.”

My chest heaved, the air thick with tension. I could feel the heat pooling low in my belly, the ache growing unbearable. I hated him for seeing through me, for knowing exactly how to unravel me with just words. But damn it, I wasn’t some fragile thing to be toyed with. If he wanted to play this game, I’d play to win.

“Fine,” I snapped, stepping closer, my voice a low growl. “But don’t think for a second I’m not in control. You want to see how hot I burn? Get ready to sweat.”

His eyes darkened, a flash of raw desire, and before I could second-guess myself, his hand was at the small of my back, pulling me against him. I could feel how hard he was already, the evidence of his want pressing against me, and it sent a thrill through my core. My fingers curled into his shirt, my breath coming in sharp pants as I stared up at him, daring him to make the next move.

“Show me,” he whispered, his lips hovering just above mine, the promise of chaos in his tone. “Show me how fucking wild you can be.”

And in that moment, I knew there was no turning back.
