Chapter 1: Sparks in the Shadows
The air in the old family cabin was thick with the scent of pine and unspoken tension as Riley and her older sister, Mara, unpacked their bags for a weekend getaway. The two hadn’t been alone together in years, not since Riley left for college and Mara took over the family business. At 25, Riley was a firecracker—sharp-tongued, fiercely independent, with a body that curved like a dangerous road. Mara, 29, was all hard edges and commanding presence, her dark eyes holding secrets Riley had always wanted to unravel. They’d grown up too close, sharing whispered confessions under blankets, fingers brushing in ways that lingered too long. Now, the cabin felt like a pressure cooker, and Riley was itching to turn up the heat.
‘So, big sis, you gonna keep pretending we’re just here to fish?’ Riley teased, tossing a flannel shirt onto the creaky bed. Her voice dripped with challenge as she leaned against the doorframe, her tank top clinging to her skin in the humid air. ‘Or are we finally gonna talk about why you keep looking at me like I’m dessert?’
Mara froze, her hand tightening around a bottle of whiskey she’d pulled from her bag. She turned, her gaze slicing through the dim light, a smirk playing on her lips. ‘Careful, Ri. You’ve got a mouth on you, but I’m not sure you can handle the bite back.’ Her voice was low, a velvet threat that made Riley’s pulse race.
‘Oh, I can handle anything you’ve got,’ Riley shot back, stepping closer, her boots scuffing the wooden floor. ‘Question is, can you? Or are you still scared of what Mom would think if she knew how bad you’ve wanted me?’
Mara’s laugh was sharp, cutting through the tension like a blade. ‘Scared? Sweetheart, I stopped caring about rules the day I caught you staring at me in the shower. You think I didn’t notice? You were practically drooling.’ She set the whiskey down with a deliberate thud, closing the distance between them. Their bodies were inches apart now, the heat of their breath mingling. ‘But let’s get one thing straight—I don’t play games I can’t win.’
Riley’s lips curled into a wicked grin, her green eyes flashing with defiance. ‘Good. ‘Cause I’m not here to lose.’ She reached out, her fingers brushing Mara’s jaw, daring her to flinch. Mara didn’t. Instead, her hand shot up, gripping Riley’s wrist with a strength that sent a jolt straight to her core. ‘You’re playing with fire, little sis,’ Mara warned, her voice a growl. ‘Keep pushing, and I’ll burn you down.’
‘Promise?’ Riley whispered, her other hand sliding to Mara’s hip, pulling her in until their bodies pressed together. The air crackled, electric with years of pent-up desire. Riley could feel Mara’s heartbeat, fast and hard, matching her own. Their lips hovered, a breath apart, the world narrowing to the heat between them.
Mara’s grip tightened, her eyes darkening with raw hunger. ‘You’ve got no idea what you’re asking for.’
‘Then show me,’ Riley challenged, her voice husky, daring her sister to cross the line they’d danced around for too long. And as Mara’s lips crashed into hers, fierce and unapologetic, Riley knew there was no turning back. The kiss was a storm—teeth and tongue, a battle for dominance neither wanted to lose. Hands roamed, desperate and bold, fabric straining as they stumbled toward the bed, the promise of something forbidden and explosive igniting every nerve in their bodies.
