Forbidden Flames

Chapter 1: The Spark Ignites

The sultry summer evening draped the coastal town of Maris Cove in a haze of heat and unspoken desires. At the edge of the pier, where the ocean whispered secrets against the weathered wood, stood Cassandra Vale, a woman whose presence commanded attention. Her raven hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her piercing green eyes scanned the horizon with a hunger that had nothing to do with the sea. At thirty-two, she was a force of nature—owner of the local dive bar, a sharp-tongued siren who took no nonsense from anyone.

Beside her, leaning against the railing with a devil-may-care smirk, was Riley Kane. His sun-kissed skin glistened with the day’s sweat, and the tight black tee he wore did little to hide the hard lines of his physique. A freelance photographer with a reputation for capturing more than just landscapes, Riley had a way of getting under people’s skin—especially Cassandra’s.

“So, Cass,” Riley drawled, his voice a low, teasing rumble, “you gonna keep staring at the water like it owes you money, or are we gonna talk about why you dragged me out here at sunset?”

Cassandra turned, her lips curling into a wicked smile. “Maybe I just wanted to see if you’d show up, Kane. Or are you too busy chasing tail to keep up with a real woman?”

He chuckled, stepping closer, the scent of salt and musk rolling off him. “Oh, I keep up just fine. Question is, can you handle me when I do?”

Her eyes narrowed, but the heat in them was unmistakable. “I’ve handled bigger egos than yours, pretty boy. Don’t flatter yourself.”

Riley’s grin widened, his gaze dropping to her lips for a split second before returning to her eyes. “Not flattery, darling. Just facts. I’ve seen the way you watch me when you think I’m not looking. Like you’re starving, and I’m the only thing on the menu.”

Cassandra laughed, sharp and biting, but she didn’t step back. Instead, she closed the distance, her chest brushing against his as she tilted her head up. “You think you’re hot shit, don’t you? Let me tell you something, Riley. If I’m hungry, it’s not for scraps. So, you’d better bring more than just talk to the table.”

His hand shot out, fingers grazing her hip, bold and unapologetic. “Oh, I’ve got plenty more than talk, Cass. But I’m not the one playing hard to get. Why don’t you drop the ice queen act and admit you’ve been dying to find out what I’m packing?”

Her breath hitched, just for a moment, but she recovered with a smirk. “Keep dreaming, Kane. I don’t beg for anything—or anyone.”

“Then don’t beg,” he murmured, his voice dropping to a growl as he leaned in, lips hovering just above hers. “Take what you want.”

The air between them crackled, charged with a tension that had been building for months. Cassandra’s hand slid up his chest, fingers curling into his shirt as she yanked him closer. Their mouths crashed together, a collision of heat and defiance, tongues battling for dominance. She tasted like whiskey and sin, and he groaned into the kiss, his grip on her hip tightening as he pressed her back against the railing.

Her nails dug into his shoulders, a silent demand for more, and Riley didn’t disappoint. His other hand slid down to cup her ass, pulling her flush against him, letting her feel just how hard he was already. “Fuck, Cass,” he muttered against her lips, “you’ve got no idea how long I’ve wanted this.”

She pulled back just enough to flash him a feral grin, her voice husky. “Then stop talking and show me, Kane. I’m not here for sweet nothings.”

His eyes darkened, a promise of everything to come, as he guided her hand down to the bulge in his jeans. “Feel that? That’s all for you, babe. And I’m just getting started.”

Cassandra’s laugh was low and dangerous, her fingers teasing him through the fabric as she leaned in to nip at his jaw. “Good. Because I don’t play nice, and I don’t stop until I get what I want.”

The ocean roared behind them, but it was nothing compared to the storm brewing between their bodies. They were seconds away from tearing into each other, from unleashing every pent-up desire right there on the pier, consequences be damned...
