Forbidden Flames

Chapter 1: Sparks in the Shadows

The dimly lit jazz club was a haze of cigarette smoke and sultry saxophone notes, a perfect hideout for secrets and desires. At the bar, Vivienne Archer sipped her martini, her crimson lips curling into a smirk as she eyed the man across the room. He was tall, rugged, with a jawline sharp enough to cut glass, and eyes that burned with a hunger she recognized all too well. She wasn’t here for romance—she was here for the thrill.

Vivienne adjusted her black satin dress, the fabric hugging her curves like a lover’s caress, and sauntered over to him, her heels clicking with purpose on the hardwood floor. She didn’t wait for an invitation, sliding onto the stool beside him with the confidence of a woman who always got what she wanted.

‘So, stranger,’ she purred, her voice low and smoky, ‘you’ve been staring at me like I’m the last piece of steak on a starving man’s plate. Care to explain, or are you just gonna drool all night?’

He chuckled, a deep, gravelly sound that sent a shiver down her spine. ‘Name’s Cade. And I’m not drooling, sweetheart. I’m calculating. Wondering if a woman like you bites as hard as she barks.’

Vivienne arched a brow, leaning in close enough for him to catch the scent of her jasmine perfume. ‘Oh, I bite, Cade. But only if you’ve got the guts to handle the marks. Question is, are you all talk, or do you have something worth sinking my teeth into?’

Cade’s smirk widened, his hand brushing against hers on the bar, the touch electric. ‘Keep talking like that, and you’ll find out real quick. I don’t play games, Vivienne. I play to win.’

She laughed, a sharp, wicked sound that turned heads. ‘Good. I hate losing. But let’s get one thing straight—I’m not some damsel waiting for a knight. If we do this, it’s on my terms. You got a problem with a woman taking the lead?’

‘Not at all,’ he shot back, his gaze dropping to her lips. ‘I like a woman who knows what she wants. Makes it hotter when I give it to her.’

The air between them crackled, charged with unspoken promises. Vivienne felt the heat pooling low in her belly, her pulse quickening as she imagined the weight of him, the taste of his skin. She wasn’t one to back down, and damn if she didn’t want to drag him into the nearest dark corner right then and there.

‘Careful, Cade,’ she warned, her voice dripping with challenge as she stood, her body brushing against his. ‘Keep looking at me like that, and I might just take you up on that offer. Right here. Right now.’

He stood too, towering over her, his breath hot against her ear as he whispered, ‘I’m counting on it, darling. Let’s see how long you can keep that fire burning before I make you melt.’

Her hand slid up his chest, fingers curling into his shirt as she pulled him toward the shadowy hallway behind the bar. The music faded, replaced by the thud of her heart and the promise of something raw, something wild. She could already feel the heat of him, the anticipation making her wet with need. Whatever happened next, Vivienne knew one thing for certain—she was about to ignite a blaze neither of them could extinguish.
