**Chapter 1: The Charged Encounter**
McKenna Schubkegel leaned against the polished mahogany bar, her sharp green eyes scanning the dimly lit lounge. She was a force of nature, a woman who commanded attention with her confident stride and razor-sharp wit. Her crimson dress hugged her curves like a lover’s caress, and she knew every man in the room was stealing glances. But McKenna wasn’t here for just anyone. She was here for a challenge.
Nathan VandeVusse sat in the corner booth, his dark gaze locked on her like a predator sizing up prey. He was ruggedly handsome, with a jawline that could cut glass and a smirk that promised trouble. McKenna felt a thrill race down her spine as she sauntered over, her heels clicking with purpose on the hardwood floor.
“Well, well, if it isn’t the infamous Nathan VandeVusse,” she purred, sliding into the booth opposite him without invitation. “I’ve heard you’re a man who doesn’t play by the rules. Care to test that theory?”
Nathan’s smirk widened, his eyes glinting with mischief. “McKenna Schubkegel. I’ve heard you chew men up and spit them out for breakfast. What makes you think I’m on the menu?”
She leaned forward, her voice dripping with challenge. “Oh, darling, I don’t think—I *know*. Question is, can you keep up, or are you just another pretty face with empty promises?”
He chuckled, a low, dangerous sound that sent a shiver through her. “Careful, sweetheart. I don’t just keep up—I take control. And I’m betting you’d look damn good losing it.”
McKenna’s lips curled into a wicked smile. “Big talk for a man who’s still sitting there. Why don’t you prove it? Or are you all bark and no bite?”
Nathan’s eyes darkened, and in one fluid motion, he was out of his seat, closing the distance between them. He towered over her, his presence intoxicating, but McKenna didn’t flinch. She tilted her chin up defiantly, her breath hitching as his hand brushed against her arm, sending sparks through her skin.
“You want to play, McKenna?” he murmured, his voice a seductive growl. “Let’s see how long you can keep that fire burning before I make you melt.”
Her heart raced, but she wasn’t about to back down. “Bring it on, VandeVusse. I don’t melt—I ignite.”
Before she could throw another barb, Nathan’s hand slid to her waist, pulling her flush against him. The heat of his body was maddening, and McKenna felt a rush of desire she couldn’t ignore. They were in a public place, but the tension between them was a live wire, crackling with unspoken promises. His fingers trailed lower, teasing the edge of her dress, and she bit her lip, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a gasp.
“You’re playing a dangerous game,” she warned, her voice husky but firm. “Touch me like that again, and I’ll make sure you regret underestimating me.”
“Oh, I’m counting on it,” he shot back, his grip tightening just enough to make her pulse spike. “But first, I’m going to make you beg for more.”
The air between them was electric, charged with raw, primal need. McKenna knew they were teetering on the edge of something explosive, something that would leave them both sweating and panting. She could feel the heat pooling between her thighs, her body betraying her resolve as Nathan’s thumb brushed against her hip, inching closer to where she was already wet with anticipation. The lounge faded away, the murmurs of other patrons becoming white noise as they stood on the precipice of surrender.
And then, just as she thought she’d push him away—or pull him closer—his lips crashed into hers, hungry and unapologetic, promising a night neither of them would forget.
