Chapter 1: Sparks in the Kitchen
The kitchen was a battlefield of unspoken tension, the air thick with the scent of simmering marinara and something far more dangerous—desire. I leaned against the counter, my arms crossed, watching Lila, my stepmother, chop vegetables with a precision that could cut through more than just carrots. At thirty-eight, she was a force of nature, her curves hugged by a tight black tank top and jeans that left little to the imagination. Her dark hair was pulled back in a messy bun, a few strands teasing the nape of her neck. She didn’t just cook; she commanded the room.
‘Staring again, Ethan?’ Her voice sliced through the silence, sharp and teasing, as she glanced over her shoulder with a smirk. Her green eyes glinted with mischief, daring me to respond.
I grinned, pushing off the counter and stepping closer, the heat of the stove nothing compared to the fire igniting between us. ‘Can’t help it. You wield that knife like you’re about to stab someone’s heart out. It’s hot.’
She laughed, a low, throaty sound that sent a jolt straight to my core. ‘Careful, kid. I’ve got twenty years of sass on you. You think you can keep up?’ She turned, pointing the knife playfully at my chest, her gaze locking with mine.
‘Kid? I’m twenty-two, Lila. And trust me, I’ve got more than enough to keep up.’ My voice dropped, laced with a challenge as I stepped into her space, the counter pressing against my hip. Her breath hitched, just for a second, but I caught it. She wasn’t as unshakable as she pretended.
‘Oh, really?’ She arched a brow, setting the knife down with a deliberate clink. Her hands landed on her hips, accentuating every dangerous curve. ‘Big talk for someone who still can’t figure out how to load the dishwasher right.’
I chuckled, leaning in until our faces were inches apart, the scent of her lavender shampoo mixing with the spice in the air. ‘Maybe I’m just distracted by the view. Ever think of that?’
Her lips parted, a flicker of something raw flashing in her eyes before she masked it with a scoff. ‘Flattery won’t get you out of chores, Ethan. But nice try.’ She turned back to the cutting board, but I saw the flush creeping up her neck. She felt it too—the pull, the forbidden edge we were dancing on.
I moved behind her, close enough that my chest brushed her back as I reached for a glass on the shelf above. ‘I’m not trying to get out of anything. I’m just saying what we’re both thinking.’ My voice was a low murmur against her ear, and I felt her stiffen, her hands pausing mid-chop.
‘And what’s that?’ she shot back, her tone daring me to cross the line, her body still as if waiting for my next move.
I leaned closer, my lips grazing the shell of her ear. ‘That this kitchen’s about to get a hell of a lot hotter.’ My hand slid to her waist, testing the waters, and she didn’t pull away. Instead, she turned her head just enough for our eyes to meet, her gaze burning with a mix of defiance and hunger.
‘You’ve got some nerve,’ she whispered, but there was no anger in it—only a raw, electric charge. Her hand dropped the knife, fingers curling into the counter as if to anchor herself. My grip tightened on her waist, pulling her back against me, and I could feel the heat of her through the thin fabric of her top.
‘Tell me to stop, Lila,’ I challenged, my other hand sliding up her arm, leaving a trail of goosebumps. ‘Tell me you don’t want this.’
Her laugh was sharp, cutting through the tension like a blade. ‘You think I’m some damsel who needs saving from her own desires? If I want something, I take it.’ And with that, she spun around, her hands grabbing my shirt and yanking me down into a kiss that was all fire and fight. Her lips were demanding, her tongue battling mine as if she could win this war of want.
My hands roamed, gripping her hips, pulling her flush against me until there was no space left for doubt. The counter dug into her back as I pressed harder, the taste of her driving me wild. We were a collision waiting to happen, and as her fingers dug into my shoulders, I knew there was no turning back from this inferno.
