Chapter 1: A Glimpse of Temptation
The summer heat clung to the old family cabin like a lover’s desperate embrace, thick and unyielding. Inside, the air was still, save for the lazy hum of a ceiling fan that did little to cool the tension brewing in Ethan’s chest. He’d come to the cabin for a weekend getaway with his extended family, a tradition he usually dreaded. But this year, at twenty-two, something felt different. Dangerous. And it all started when he stumbled into the wrong bedroom.
There she was—Lila, his cousin, sprawled across the creaky twin bed, her tanned legs tangled in a thin sheet. Her shorts were half-pulled down, revealing the edge of black lace panties that had slipped just low enough to expose the curve of her hip. Ethan froze, his breath catching in his throat. He knew he should’ve turned away, should’ve slammed the door and pretended he’d seen nothing. But his eyes lingered, tracing the lines of her body, the way her chest rose and fell with each soft, oblivious breath.
“Shit,” he muttered under his breath, dragging a hand through his dark hair. “Get a grip, man.”
As if on cue, Lila stirred, her eyes fluttering open. They locked on him, sharp and unapologetic, a smirk curling her full lips. She didn’t rush to cover herself. Instead, she propped herself up on one elbow, her gaze cutting through him like a blade.
“Enjoying the view, Ethan?” Her voice was low, teasing, with a bite that made his stomach twist. “Or are you just lost again? You’ve got the sense of direction of a blind bat.”
He swallowed hard, trying to play it cool, but his voice came out rougher than he intended. “Didn’t mean to barge in. Door was open. Thought this was my room.”
Lila arched a brow, sitting up now, her shorts still askew, not bothering to fix them. “Sure, blame the door. Bet you’ve been dying for an excuse to sneak a peek. Don’t play innocent with me. I’ve seen the way you look at me at family dinners—like you’re starving and I’m the damn main course.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, heat creeping up his neck. She wasn’t wrong, and that pissed him off. “You’re full of yourself, Lila. Maybe I just stumbled in. Ever think of that?”
She laughed, a sharp, knowing sound that sent a jolt straight through him. “Oh, please. Your eyes are practically begging right now. Don’t pretend you’re not itching to come closer.” She leaned forward, her tank top slipping just enough to reveal more skin, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Question is, are you man enough to do something about it, or are you just gonna stand there gawking?”
His pulse hammered in his ears. Every rational thought screamed at him to walk away—this was Lila, his cousin, the girl he’d grown up bickering with over board games and stolen cookies. But there was nothing innocent about the way she was looking at him now, her eyes daring him, her body an unspoken challenge. He took a step forward, then another, until he was standing at the edge of the bed, close enough to feel the heat radiating off her.
“You’ve got a mouth on you,” he said, his voice low, almost a growl. “Always have. But you sure you wanna play this game? ‘Cause I don’t back down.”
Lila’s smirk widened, her fingers brushing the edge of her shorts, teasingly slow. “Oh, I’m not playing, Ethan. I’m winning. Question is, can you keep up?”
The air between them crackled, thick with unspoken desire. His hands clenched at his sides, fighting the urge to reach for her, to pull her close and feel every inch of that defiant, infuriating body against his. She tilted her head, her lips parting just slightly, and he knew—there was no turning back.
