Chapter 1: Sparks in the Shadows
The air was thick with the scent of pine and unspoken tension as Riley leaned against the rough bark of an old oak tree, his lithe frame almost blending into the twilight. At twenty-two, he was all sharp angles and sly grins, a twink with a devilish charm that could unravel even the most stoic of men. Across from him stood Caleb, thirty and built like a goddamn lumberjack, his broad shoulders straining against a flannel shirt, dark stubble framing a jaw that could cut glass. They’d been friends since high school, but tonight, something simmered beneath their usual banter—a heat that neither could ignore.
‘So, big guy, you gonna stand there brooding all night, or are we gonna talk about why you’ve been staring at me like I’m your next meal?’ Riley teased, his voice dripping with mischief as he flicked a strand of blond hair from his piercing blue eyes. He crossed his arms, the motion accentuating the lean muscles beneath his tight black tee.
Caleb grunted, a low rumble that sent a shiver down Riley’s spine. ‘Keep running that smart mouth, Ri, and I might just shut it for you,’ he shot back, stepping closer, his boots crunching on the forest floor. The space between them crackled, electric and dangerous.
‘Oh, promises, promises,’ Riley purred, tilting his head with a smirk. ‘You’ve been flexing those biceps all day, Cal. Think I haven’t noticed? What’s a girl gotta do to get a closer look?’ His tone was playful, but his gaze was predatory, locking onto Caleb’s with an intensity that belied his smaller stature.
Caleb’s eyes darkened, a storm brewing behind them. ‘You’re playing with fire, kid. You sure you can handle the burn?’ He towered over Riley now, close enough that the heat of his body was a tangible thing, a challenge wrapped in raw masculinity.
Riley didn’t back down, not for a second. He stepped forward, closing the gap, his chest brushing against Caleb’s. ‘Try me, tough guy. I’m not some fragile little thing. I bite back.’ His voice dropped to a husky whisper, lips curling into a wicked smile as he let his fingers graze Caleb’s arm, feeling the hard muscle beneath.
The tension snapped like a taut wire. Caleb’s hand shot out, gripping Riley’s chin with a roughness that was just shy of pain, tilting his face up. ‘You’ve got no idea what you’re asking for,’ he growled, but his thumb brushed over Riley’s lower lip, betraying the hunger in his restraint.
‘Then show me,’ Riley challenged, his breath hitching as he felt the first stirrings of something hard pressing against his thigh through Caleb’s jeans. His own body responded, a rush of heat pooling low, making him ache with a need he wasn’t shy about owning. ‘I’m not here to play games, Cal. I want it. I want you.’
Caleb’s control wavered, his grip tightening as he backed Riley against the tree, the bark scraping through his shirt. ‘Fuck, Ri, you’re gonna be the death of me,’ he muttered, voice raw, before crashing his lips against Riley’s in a kiss that was all teeth and desperation. Riley moaned into it, hands fisting in Caleb’s flannel, pulling him closer, grinding against the unmistakable bulge that promised so much more.
Their breaths came fast, panting already, as Riley’s fingers worked at Caleb’s belt with a deftness that spoke of experience. ‘Gonna make you feel so good,’ he whispered against Caleb’s neck, nipping at the skin as he dropped to his knees, the forest floor rough under him. His eyes gleamed with intent, locked on Caleb’s as he tugged down the zipper, ready to unleash everything they’d both been craving.
