The grand mansion's living room was a picture of disarray when Lexi and Ashley entered, their heels clicking against the marble floor. Lexi, the older of the two, surveyed the room with a critical eye, her perfectly arched brow furrowing in disapproval. Ashley, on the other hand, simply rolled her eyes and let out a dramatic sigh.
"Honestly, it's like no one lives here anymore," Lexi muttered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. She picked up a stray pillow from the floor and tossed it onto the couch, her movements stiff and uncoordinated.
Ashley followed suit, picking up a pile of books and placing them back on the dusty shelves. "Well, it's not like we've been here much lately," she shot back, her voice laced with bitterness. "You're the one who's been too busy with your fancy city life to bother coming home."
Lexi opened her mouth to retort, but before she could get a word out, a log in the fireplace cracked and sparked, causing both sisters to jump and exchange playful insults.
"Watch it, city slicker, or you'll start a fire," Ashley teased, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of her lips.
Lexi rolled her eyes, but a small chuckle escaped her lips. "As if you're one to talk, country mouse. You're the one who's been living out here in the wilderness for God knows how long."
The atmosphere in the room began to shift as they worked together, the hostility slowly dissipating. Lexi broke the silence, making a sarcastic comment about the state of the mansion's dusty shelves.
"I'm surprised we haven't been overrun by a family of dust bunnies," she quipped, holding up a particularly dirty book for emphasis.
Ashley retorted with a witty comeback, and they both shared a genuine laugh for the first time in years. The sound filled the room, echoing off the high ceilings and bringing a warmth to the chilly air.
They continued their work, the tension between them easing as they found a rhythm. Lexi offered Ashley a cup of hot chocolate, their eyes meeting for a brief moment before looking away. Ashley accepted, taking a sip and commenting on the mediocre quality of the cocoa.
"Honestly, Lex, you'd think with all your money you could afford something better than this powdered crap," she joked, holding up the cup for emphasis.
Lexi shot back with a humorous jab, and they both laughed again, the sound filling the room. The fire crackled and sparks, casting a warm glow over the sisters as they sat together on the couch.
As the night wore on, Ashley brought up an old memory from their childhood, and Lexi joined in, adding her own version of the story. They reminisced, their laughter subsiding as they remembered the good times they shared.
The night ended with the two sisters in a fragile truce, the bickering replaced by cautious unease and a glimmer of hope for a thaw in their icy relationship. It was a small step, but one that held the promise of many more to come.
