Cady's stomach churned as she stared down at her plate, the once-appetizing stack of pancakes now looking about as appealing as a pile of soggy cardboard. She pushed the plate away, a sigh of frustration escaping her lips as she rubbed her temples.
"You okay, love?"
Hephaestus's voice made her jump, and she turned to see him entering the kitchen, a curious expression on his face as he took in the untouched pancakes.
"Just feeling a bit off," she replied, forcing a smile. "I thought food might help, but..." She gestured weakly at the plate.
Hephaestus's eyes narrowed, and he moved closer, studying her face. "You've been looking a bit pale lately," he commented. "And tired."
Cady rolled her eyes, trying to hide her irritation. "I'm fine, really. Just need some rest, I guess."
But even as she spoke, a thought occurred to her, and she stood up abruptly, her heart pounding in her chest. "Actually, I think I'm going to go take a pregnancy test. Just to be sure."
Hephaestus blinked, looking taken aback. "A... pregnancy test?"
Cady nodded, already making her way to the bathroom. "Yeah, you know, those little sticks they sell at the drugstore? I'll be right back."
A few minutes later, she emerged from the bathroom, holding the test in a death grip. Hephaestus was still standing in the kitchen, looking bewildered.
"Well?" he asked, as she approached him.
Cady held up the test, her heart still racing as she took in the two pink lines staring back at her.
"Well," she repeated, trying to keep her voice steady. "I guess we're going to be parents."
Hephaestus stared at the test, his face a mask of disbelief. "But... that's not possible."
Cady raised an eyebrow, fighting the urge to roll her eyes again. "And why is that?"
"Well... I mean... I thought we couldn't have children," Hephaestus stammered, looking flustered.
Cady sighed, resisting the urge to snap at him. "Yes, we couldn't have children the traditional way," she explained, trying to keep her patience. "But that doesn't mean it's impossible. We're a bit... unconventional, remember?"
Hephaestus still looked shocked, and Cady couldn't help but feel a twinge of annoyance. "You know, for someone who's supposed to be so smart, you can be awfully slow on the uptake sometimes," she said, trying to keep her tone light.
Hephaestus finally seemed to snap out of his daze, looking at her with a mixture of guilt and determination. "You're right," he said, taking a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I just... I wasn't expecting this."
Cady softened, feeling a surge of affection for her partner. "I know," she said, reaching out to take his hand. "Neither was I, really. But we'll figure it out. Together."
Hephaestus squeezed her hand, looking grateful. "Thank you," he said, his voice sincere. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Cady smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "Well, you'd probably be stuck eating those terrible pancakes for the rest of your life," she joked.
Hephaestus laughed, the tension breaking as he pulled her into a hug. "I'll have you know, I can cook too," he said, his voice muffled against her shoulder.
Cady pulled back, raising an eyebrow. "Oh really? Prove it."
Hephaestus grinned, determination flashing in his eyes. "Challenge accepted."
And with that, the two of them spent the rest of the day in a happy, playful daze, excited and nervous for what was to come.
