Hard Yards and Heated Fences

### Chapter One: Yard Work and Wicked Thoughts

Mia stood at her kitchen window, a half-empty coffee mug forgotten in her hand, her gaze locked on the scene unfolding in her suburban backyard. The morning sun beat down on Jake, her neighbor-turned-handyman, as he hauled dirt with a grunt of effort. His faded jeans clung to every hard line of his body, the fabric stretching taut over his thighs and ass as he moved. Sweat glistened on his tanned forearms, and the white t-shirt he wore was practically translucent, sticking to the ridges of his chest. Mia’s lips parted slightly, her breath catching as her eyes dipped lower. There it was—an unmistakable bulge in his pants, bold and unapologetic, taunting her from across the yard.

“Jesus,” she muttered under her breath, her grip tightening on the counter until her knuckles whitened. A wicked heat pooled between her thighs, unbidden and unrelenting, making her shift uncomfortably. She tore her gaze away, only to snap it right back. “Get a grip, Mia. You’re not some desperate housewife.” But the words felt hollow. Her life had become a beige blur of routine—laundry, bills, and a husband who barely noticed her anymore. And here was Jake, all raw muscle and reckless energy, digging up her yard like he could unearth every filthy thought she’d buried deep. “Bet he could dig more than just dirt,” she smirked to herself, the thought slipping out before she could stop it.

Enough was enough. She wasn’t about to stand here drooling like some teenager with a crush. If she was going to burn, she’d do it up close. Mia tossed her mug into the sink with a clatter, then tugged on a tight black tank top and a pair of denim shorts that hugged her curves like a second skin. She caught her reflection in the hallway mirror—dark hair pulled into a messy bun, hazel eyes sharp with intent—and grinned. “Let’s see if you can keep up, pretty boy.”

The back door slammed behind her as she strode out into the yard, the summer heat hitting her like a wall. Jake noticed her immediately, pausing mid-shovel to wipe sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. A slow, cocky smirk tugged at his lips as he leaned on the shovel, his posture all lazy confidence, like he knew exactly what she was here for.

“Well, well,” Mia called out, her voice dripping with mock disdain as she crossed the grass, hips swaying just enough to make a point. “Look at you, a dirt-covered disaster. You gonna clean up my yard or just stand there looking like a damn mess?”

Jake’s smirk widened into a full-blown grin, his blue eyes glinting with mischief as they raked over her. “Oh, I’m a mess, huh? Funny, considering you’ve been spyin’ on me from that kitchen window for the last twenty minutes. Enjoyin’ the view, darlin’?”

Her cheeks flushed, but she didn’t back down, planting herself a few feet from him with a hand on her hip. “Don’t flatter yourself, Jake. I was just making sure you didn’t screw up my flowerbeds. But if I’m staring, it’s only ‘cause I’m wondering how someone can look so incompetent with a shovel.”

He laughed, a low, rough sound that sent a shiver skittering down her spine despite the heat. “Incompetent? Sweetheart, I’ve been haulin’ dirt all mornin’ while you’ve been sippin’ coffee and daydreamin’. Wanna grab a shovel and show me how it’s done?”

Mia stepped closer, her gaze flicking over the sweat-slicked planes of his chest before snapping back to his face. “Keep talking, and I just might. But first, take a look at that.” She jerked her chin toward the fence line separating their properties, where a slat hung loose, splintered and pathetic. “That’s been broken for weeks. You gonna fix it, or do I have to drag my toolbox out here and embarrass you?”

Jake tilted his head, still grinning as he sauntered over to the fence, his arm brushing against hers as he leaned in to inspect the damage. The heat of his skin, the faint scent of sweat and earth, hit her like a punch, making her pulse hammer in her throat. “Looks like a quick fix,” he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rough around the edges. “But I dunno, Mia. You seem like the type to break things just for the fun of it.”

She crossed her arms, pushing her chest out just enough to draw his eye, her tone sharp but laced with something darker, hungrier. “Fix it faster, Jake, or I’ll do it myself. And trust me, I don’t play nice with tools—or with men who can’t keep up.”

His chuckle was low, dangerous, his gaze darkening as it locked with hers. “Oh, I bet you don’t. Hell, with that attitude, you’d probably break more than just fences. Maybe I oughta stick around, make sure you don’t hurt yourself… or anyone else.”

The air between them crackled, thick with tension, as Mia held his stare, refusing to blink first. Her body screamed for more than words, every nerve on edge, but she wasn’t about to let him see her falter. She uncrossed her arms, letting her hands fall to her sides, and caught the way his eyes flicked down to her hips before dragging back up. “Careful, Jake,” she said, her voice a low purr now, barely masking the heat beneath it. “Keep looking at me like that, and you’ll be the one getting hurt.”

He straightened, wiping his hands on his jeans, the slow, deliberate motion drawing her gaze right back to that distracting bulge. Her mouth went dry, but she forced herself to keep it together. Jake raised a brow, clearly noticing where her attention had landed, but he didn’t call her out. Not yet.

Mia took a step back, needing space before she did something reckless like drag him behind the shed and find out just how much trouble he could cause. “You’re a walking distraction, you know that?” she tossed over her shoulder, her voice biting as she turned on her heel. “Try to focus on the yard instead of running your mouth.”

As she walked away, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her chest, Jake’s low whistle followed her, a lazy, taunting sound that promised all kinds of trouble. “Keep walkin’, Mia,” he called after her, his tone thick with amusement. “But we both know you’ll be back.”

She didn’t turn around, didn’t give him the satisfaction, but the heat between her thighs flared hotter, leaving her wet and aching as she slipped back into the house. This was only the beginning, and damn if she wasn’t already craving more.
