The hat was placed on the head of a girl with dark hair and piercing green eyes. Her name was Harriet Potter, and she wore a mischievous grin as the hat began to sing.
"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I've got the best brain of any in the school,
When I choose, it's not by chance,
Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin,
I'll make sure to put you right,
Where you belong, you'll find your kindred spirits,
Together we will work and play,
In the house that suits you best,
While you're here at Hogwarts."
As the hat droned on, Harriet's mind began to wander. She had heard the rumors about the Sorting Hat's secret - that it could be influenced by the thoughts and desires of the student it was placed upon. And Harriet had a very specific desire.
"Slytherin it is, then!" the Sorting Hat announced, and Harriet couldn't help but smirk with satisfaction. She had done it. She was a Slytherin.
As she took her seat among the green and silver, Harriet's eyes scanned the crowd. She noticed a group of girls giggling and whispering to each other. Harriet approached them, her head held high.
"Hi there," she said, extending a hand. "I'm Harriet. What are your names?"
The redhead in the group looked Harriet up and down before responding. "I'm Rose. Nice to meet you."
Harriet raised an eyebrow. "Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes," she said, mimicking Rose's tone.
The girls laughed, and Harriet joined in. She noticed one of them rolling her eyes - a brunette with piercing green eyes. Harriet couldn't help but be drawn to her.
"Hey, you," she said, approaching the brunette. "I'm Harriet. What's your name?"
"Lily," the girl replied, her tone cool.
Harriet grinned. "I challenge you to a dueling competition," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Lily looked surprised, but she accepted the challenge. The two girls faced off, their wands at the ready. The other students gathered around to watch.
Harriet easily defeated Lily, but instead of being angry, Lily looked intrigued. "You're not like any Slytherin I've ever met," she said.
Harriet winked at Lily. "That's because I'm not just any Slytherin," she replied.
Harriet spent the rest of the day getting to know her new classmates, but she couldn't stop thinking about Lily. That night, she snuck into the Slytherin common room and found Lily sitting by the fire.
Harriet sat down next to Lily and started a conversation. The two girls talked and laughed until the early hours of the morning.
As Harriet got ready to leave, Lily asked, "Will I see you again tomorrow?"
Harriet grinned. "You can count on it," she said.
