Harvest of Desire

Harvest of Desire

Chapter 1: The Spark in the Hay

I never thought a summer at Grandma’s farm would turn my world upside down. The endless fields, the scent of fresh hay, and the quiet hum of rural life were supposed to be a boring escape. That is, until I met Emmy. She was a wildfire of a woman—red hair blazing like the sunset, freckles dusting her sharp cheekbones, and a laugh that could cut through the thickest silence. From the moment I saw her hauling bales of hay with a strength that rivaled any man’s, I was hooked.

‘Hey, city boy, you gonna stand there gawking or help a girl out?’ she teased on that first day, wiping sweat from her brow, her green eyes glinting with mischief.

I grinned, stumbling over my words. ‘I—uh, yeah, I’m coming. Didn’t expect to see someone like you out here.’

‘Someone like me?’ She arched a brow, hands on her hips. ‘What’s that supposed to mean? Too pretty for farm work?’

‘No, no, I mean—damn, you’re strong. And yeah, gorgeous,’ I admitted, feeling my face heat up.

She smirked, tossing a hay bale at me with ease. ‘Flattery won’t get you out of work, but keep it up. I like a man who knows how to talk.’

Days turned into weeks, and we were inseparable. We’d race through the fields, sneak apples from the orchard, and talk about everything under the sun. I was falling hard, and I couldn’t help myself. One afternoon, I caught her bathing in the river, her bare skin glistening under the dappled sunlight. I hid behind a tree, heart pounding, knowing I shouldn’t look but unable to tear my eyes away. That image burned into my mind, fueling restless nights.

Then there was Kado. Tall, built like a damn tank, with a smirk that screamed trouble. He’d linger around Emmy, his deep voice dripping with arrogance. ‘Come on, Red, you know you want a real man to show you a good time,’ he’d say, leaning too close.

Emmy would roll her eyes, pushing him away with a sharp laugh. ‘Kado, I’d sooner fuck a scarecrow than deal with your sorry ass. Get lost.’

I admired her fire, but I hated how he kept circling her like a vulture. I wanted to step in, to be her hero, but I was just some skinny city kid. What could I do against a guy like him?

One evening, as the sun dipped low, Kado approached me near the barn, holding out a sleek gadget—a drone, the kind I’d only dreamed of owning. ‘Hey, kid, you want this?’ he asked, his grin wide and sly.

I eyed it, suspicious. ‘What’s the catch?’

‘Just a small favor,’ he said, his tone smooth as sin. ‘Tell Emmy to meet me at the old shed tonight. Tell her there’s a surprise for the harvest festival. She’ll love it.’

I hesitated, but the drone gleamed in his hand, and I didn’t see the harm. ‘Fine. But if this is some creepy shit, I’m not involved.’

He chuckled, clapping my shoulder. ‘Relax, man. It’s all good.’

I found Emmy later, her hair tied back, dirt smudged on her cheek from a long day’s work. ‘Hey, there’s a surprise for you tonight at the shed,’ I said, trying to sound casual. ‘Something for the harvest festival.’

She tilted her head, a playful smirk tugging at her lips. ‘A surprise, huh? You coming with me, city boy, or do I have to face this mystery alone?’

‘I—uh, I’ll catch up,’ I lied, feeling a strange knot in my gut.

As night fell, curiosity—and a nagging unease—drove me to follow her. I crept toward the shed, the air thick with the scent of earth and anticipation. Through a crack in the weathered wood, I saw them. Kado had her pinned against the wall, his hands roaming her body. My stomach twisted, but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t look away. Her gasps, his grunts—they echoed in my ears as I stood there, frozen, my breath hitching. And then, something shameful stirred in me. My hand moved on its own, and I hated myself for it.

I should’ve stopped it. I should’ve done something. But I didn’t. And now, as I watch Emmy’s mysterious smiles and hear her say, ‘I’ll see you later,’ before disappearing with Kado, I know I’ve lost something I never even had. Yet, I can’t stop watching. I can’t stop wanting. And tonight, as I hide in the shadows again, I feel the heat building, my body betraying me once more.
