Chapter 1: The Spark in the Hay
I never thought a summer at Grandma’s farm would turn my world upside down. The endless fields, the scent of earth after rain, and then there was Emmy—fiery, untamed, with hair like a sunset blazing across the horizon. From the moment I saw her hauling hay bales with a smirk, I was done for. We clicked instantly, laughing over dumb jokes and sneaking off to explore the creeks. I’d watch her, heart pounding, as she’d splash water on her freckled skin, her laughter cutting through the quiet. I even caught myself spying on her once, hidden behind the reeds as she bathed in the river, her curves glistening under the sun. I felt like a damn fool, but I couldn’t look away.
‘Hey, city boy, you gonna help or just stare all day?’ Emmy teased one afternoon, catching me gawking as she hefted a pitchfork. Her green eyes sparkled with mischief, and I fumbled for words.
‘Just... admiring the view,’ I shot back, grinning like an idiot. She rolled her eyes but flashed a smile that made my chest tighten.
Then there was Kado. Tall, built like a damn oak tree, with a grin that screamed trouble. He’d hover around Emmy, his voice low and suggestive, hands too close for comfort. ‘C’mon, Red, you know you want a real man to show you a good time,’ he’d purr, and I’d clench my fists, hating how small I felt next to him.
‘Back off, Kado. I don’t need your kind of ‘good time,’’ Emmy snapped, brushing him off with a glare that could cut steel. She didn’t take shit from anyone, and damn, it made me want her more.
We spent days together, talking about everything—dreams, fears, the way the stars looked brighter out here. I was falling hard, and I thought maybe, just maybe, she felt it too. But then Kado cornered me one evening by the barn, holding up some fancy tech gadget that looked straight out of a sci-fi flick. ‘You want this, kid?’ he asked, his voice smooth as sin. ‘I’ll give it to ya. Just do me a little favor.’
‘What kind of favor?’ I asked, suspicion prickling my skin.
He smirked, leaning in close. ‘Tell Emmy to meet me in the old shed tonight. Tell her there’s a surprise for the harvest festival. She’ll love it.’
I should’ve seen the trap, but I was too caught up in the shiny toy and the thought of doing something for Emmy. So I did it. I found her by the orchard, her hair catching the last light of day, and told her about the ‘surprise.’
‘A surprise, huh? You in on this, city boy?’ she teased, nudging me with her elbow. Her touch sent a jolt through me.
‘Just... trust me. You’ll like it,’ I lied, my stomach twisting.
I couldn’t shake the unease, so I followed her that night, creeping through the shadows to the shed. The door creaked as she stepped inside, and then I heard her sharp gasp. Peering through a crack in the wood, I saw Kado—his massive frame looming over her, his hands gripping her waist. My blood ran cold, but my feet wouldn’t move. I just watched, heart hammering, as he pulled her close, his intentions clear. And Emmy... she didn’t scream or fight like I expected. There was a moment, a flicker of something in her eyes, before the air grew thick with tension.
I should’ve burst in, should’ve done something, but I was frozen, my breath hitching as the scene unfolded. My hand moved on its own, slipping down, guilt and desire warring inside me. I hated myself for it, but I couldn’t stop. The sounds, the heat—it was too much. I was hard, aching, as I watched them, knowing I’d crossed a line I could never uncross.
