**Chapter 1: The Simmering Gaze**
The New York summer clung to Mia’s skin like a lover who wouldn’t let go, the air thick with humidity and unspoken tension. Her apartment, a sleek loft in Brooklyn, was a furnace, the ancient AC wheezing its last breaths. She stood by the window, a glass of chilled rosé in hand, her sharp eyes scanning the street below. That’s when she saw him. Again. Ethan, her infuriatingly cocky neighbor, was shirtless in his own window across the narrow alley, his hard, sculpted body glistening with sweat as he lifted weights like he was auditioning for a goddamn Greek statue.
Mia bit her lip, her breath hitching. She wasn’t some wilting flower; she was a lawyer who chewed up opposing counsel for breakfast. But Ethan? He did things to her. Made her wet just by existing. Horny in a way that pissed her off. She hated how much she wanted to drag her nails down that chiseled chest, to feel the heat of him under her fingertips.
“You gonna keep staring, counselor, or you gonna come over and make a case for yourself?” Ethan’s voice cut through the humid night, low and taunting, as he caught her gaze. He leaned against his window frame, a smirk curling his lips, his dark eyes pinning her in place.
Mia didn’t flinch. She tilted her head, her own smirk matching his. “Maybe I’m just enjoying the view, neighbor. Not every man’s worth the cross-examination.”
He chuckled, the sound rough and dangerous, sending a shiver down her spine. “Oh, I’m worth it, Mia. Bet I could make you plead guilty in under ten minutes.”
Her laugh was sharp, cutting through the tension like a blade. “Big words for a man who’s all show and no substance. You think you can handle me, Ethan? I don’t break easy.”
“Sweetheart, I don’t want you to break. I want you to fucking shatter.” He stepped closer to his window, his voice dropping to a growl. “Why don’t you come find out if I’m bluffing?”
Mia’s pulse raced, her grip tightening on the glass. She should’ve walked away, poured herself another drink, and buried this stupid, reckless heat under a pile of case files. But her body had other ideas. She set the glass down, her decision made in the space of a heartbeat. “Give me five minutes. Don’t start without me.”
Ethan’s grin was feral. “Wouldn’t dream of it. Door’s unlocked.”
She didn’t bother with pleasantries as she crossed the alley, the heat outside nothing compared to the fire building inside her. Her black silk camisole clung to her skin, her shorts barely covering the essentials, but she didn’t care. She was Mia fucking Reynolds, and if she wanted something—or someone—she took it.
His door swung open before she could knock, and there he was, all six-foot-two of pure, infuriating temptation. The air between them crackled, electric and heavy. “Took you long enough,” he drawled, stepping aside to let her in, his eyes raking over her like she was prey.
“Had to make sure you weren’t a waste of my time,” she shot back, brushing past him, her shoulder grazing his bare chest. The contact sent a jolt through her, and she knew he felt it too by the way his jaw tightened.
“Trust me, babe, I’m gonna be the best damn investment you’ve ever made.” He shut the door with a decisive click, turning to face her. The space between them vanished as he stepped closer, his heat enveloping her. “Now, you gonna keep talking, or are we doing this?”
Mia’s eyes flashed with challenge. “Shut up and show me what you’ve got, Ethan. I’m not here for foreplay.”
His hands were on her in an instant, rough and hungry, pulling her against him as their mouths crashed together. The kiss was a battle, all teeth and tongue, neither of them yielding. Her fingers dug into his shoulders, his grip tight on her hips, and she could feel him—hard, insistent, pressing against her. The promise of what was coming made her ache, her body already dripping with need as they stumbled toward the nearest wall, ready to ignite.
