Chapter 1: Cramped Quarters
The old family SUV was packed to the brim, every inch stuffed with camping gear, coolers, and duffel bags. The summer road trip to the mountains was a tradition, but this year, space was tighter than ever. Mia, a fierce single mom of 42 with a sharp tongue and a body that still turned heads, surveyed the chaos with a sigh. Her son, Jake, 22 and fresh out of college, was sprawled in the backseat, headphones on, oblivious to the Tetris game of luggage around him.
'Jake, budge over. I’m not riding shotgun with your dad’s ancient GPS barking at me,' Mia snapped, yanking open the back door. Her ex wasn’t even on this trip, but his outdated tech still haunted her. Jake pulled out an earbud, smirking.
'What’s the plan, Mom? You gonna ride on the roof?' His tone was teasing, those hazel eyes glinting with mischief.
'Funny, smartass. Scoot. I’m sitting on your lap if I have to,' she shot back, her voice dripping with mock exasperation. She wasn’t kidding, though. There was nowhere else to go.
Jake raised an eyebrow, a slow grin spreading across his face. 'You serious? I’m not exactly a kid anymore, you know.'
'Oh, I’ve noticed,' Mia retorted, her gaze flicking over his broad shoulders and the way his T-shirt clung to his chest. She wasn’t blind. 'Don’t make it weird. It’s just a seat.'
He shrugged, patting his thigh like it was a throne. 'Hop on, then. Let’s see how long you last before you’re begging for a rest stop.'
Mia rolled her eyes but climbed in, settling onto his lap with a deliberate wiggle to get comfortable. The car lurched as they hit the highway, and she felt the hard muscle of his thigh beneath her. Damn, when did he get so solid? She shifted again, trying to ignore the heat creeping up her neck.
'Stop squirming, Mom. You’re killing me here,' Jake muttered, his voice low, a little rough. His hands hovered near her hips, not quite touching, but close enough to make her hyper-aware.
'Killing you? I’m the one perched on a human rock. You been lifting or just smuggling bricks in your jeans?' she fired back, turning her head to catch his smirk. Bad move. Their faces were inches apart, his breath warm on her cheek.
'Keep talking like that, and you’ll find out what I’m packing,' he quipped, his tone playful but edged with something darker, something that made her pulse kick up.
Mia laughed, sharp and quick, but her mind was racing. She could feel the tension building, the air in the cramped car growing thick. Another bump in the road pressed her back against his chest, and she swore she felt something hard beneath her—definitely not a brick. Her breath hitched, but she wasn’t about to back down.
'Careful, kiddo. You’re playing with fire, and I don’t burn easy,' she warned, her voice a husky challenge as she shifted again, this time on purpose, testing his limits.
Jake’s hands finally landed on her hips, a light grip but firm enough to send a jolt through her. 'Maybe I like the heat,' he murmured, his lips brushing her ear just enough to make her shiver.
The car hummed along the highway, the world outside a blur, but inside, the space between them was electric. Mia’s mind screamed to stop, but her body was already leaning into the forbidden thrill. She turned slightly, her lips hovering near his, daring him to make the next move as her heart pounded, her skin already sweating with anticipation. Whatever came next, she knew it would be explosive.
