Inheritance of Desire

Inheritance of Desire

Chapter 1: The Proposition and the Arrival

The autumn morning draped their cozy kitchen in a melancholic gray, the kind of gloom that made Marie’s fiery red hair seem like a beacon of warmth. She sat across from Mark, her blue eyes glinting with a quiet mischief as they sipped coffee, when the doorbell shattered the stillness. John, their old friend with a sly grin and a twinkle of trouble in his brown eyes, burst in with news that would change everything.

'Guess who’s a millionaire now?' John announced, slapping a thick envelope on the table. 'Inherited a countryside manor and a fat bank account. But there’s a catch—I need to be in a serious relationship to claim it. Marie, darling, how about playing my girlfriend for a week? I keep the house, you and Mark get the cash. Several million, to be exact.'

Marie’s brows arched, her full lips curling into a skeptical smirk. 'You’re asking me to fake it with you while my husband watches? That’s a bold move, John. What’s in it for you, besides the house?'

John leaned closer, his voice a low purr. 'Just the pleasure of your company, sweetheart. No funny business, I swear.'

Mark, ever the calm protector, interjected with a steady gaze. 'We trust you, John, but this better not be some game. Marie’s my world. We’ll do it for the money—life-changing money—but don’t cross any lines.'

Marie reached for Mark’s hand, squeezing it with a reassuring smile. 'We’ve got this, love. One week, and we’re set for life. Let’s play the part.'

By afternoon, they’d packed and arrived at John’s inherited estate, a sprawling gothic manor that loomed under the overcast sky. The air was thick with secrets as Caroline, John’s older sister, greeted them at the door. Her pale skin, adorned with intricate tattoos, contrasted with her bold brown eyes that seemed to strip you bare. She was a vision of danger and allure, towering over Marie at 183 centimeters.

'Welcome, lovebirds,' Caroline drawled, her voice dripping with a knowing edge as she eyed Marie and John. 'I’ve prepared a guest room for Mark. Thought it’d be more… convincing if the happy couple shared a bed.'

Mark’s jaw tightened, but he forced a smile. 'As long as it’s just for show, I’m fine. Right, Marie?'

Marie tossed her red locks over her shoulder, her tone sharp and playful. 'Don’t worry, babe. I can handle a little pretend. John knows I’m not a toy to be played with.'

Caroline smirked, leading them to a grand parlor for tea. 'I’ve planned a full week of activities to test this… relationship. Let’s see how convincing you two can be.' Her gaze lingered on Marie, a predatory glint flashing as she sipped her tea. 'Marie, you’ve got a fire in you. I like that. We’re going to have fun.'

Marie met Caroline’s stare head-on, her voice laced with steel. 'Fun is fine, as long as it’s on my terms. I’m no one’s pawn.'

As the evening deepened, Caroline excused herself to show Mark his room, leaving Marie and John alone by the flickering fireplace. The tension was palpable, the air charged with unspoken desires. John moved closer, his voice a husky whisper. 'You know, Marie, a week is a long time to pretend. What if we made it a little real? Just for a night.'

Marie’s eyes narrowed, but a dangerous curiosity flickered within. 'You think you can handle me, John? I’m not some easy conquest. Push too hard, and I’ll burn you.'

John grinned, undeterred, his hand brushing against her arm. 'I like a challenge. And I’ve got a lot to offer—more than just money.' His gaze dropped, suggestive and bold, hinting at the heat he was packing.

Marie’s breath hitched, her fair skin flushing despite herself. She stood, her curves a tantalizing silhouette against the firelight, her voice low and commanding. 'Careful, John. You’re playing with fire, and I don’t melt easily.'

Their eyes locked, the room shrinking to just the two of them, the promise of something forbidden simmering beneath the surface. The week had just begun, and already the lines of pretense were blurring, threatening to ignite into something raw and untamed.
