The entrance of Jose's hacienda came into view, and Isa couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. The journey from her father's home had been harrowing, made worse by the fact that Jose had refused to let her retrieve the dropped picture of her mother.
As they approached the hacienda, the guards greeted Jose with respect, but Isa couldn't help but notice the way they eyed her with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. She couldn't blame them, really. She was a stranger in their midst, and they had no way of knowing if she was friend or foe.
Jose led Isa into the hacienda, and she was immediately struck by its grandeur. The high ceilings, intricate tile work, and beautiful furnishings were a stark contrast to her modest upbringing. She couldn't help but let out a low whistle, which earned her a playful nudge from Jose.
"I see you like it," he said, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.
Isa rolled her eyes. "It's impressive, I'll give you that. But it doesn't make up for the fact that you stole me away from my home without so much as a goodbye."
Jose's smirk faltered for a moment, but he quickly recovered. "I did what I had to do, Isa. Your father's rogues were shooting at us. I couldn't risk your safety."
Isa couldn't deny the logic in his words, but she was still angry. "So you just decided to whisk me away to your hacienda, without even consulting me? I'm not a prize to be won, Jose."
Jose held up his hands in surrender. "I know that, Isa. I'm sorry. I just wanted to keep you safe."
Isa sighed, her anger dissipating slightly. "Fine. But don't think this means I'm going to be your obedient little wife."
Jose chuckled. "I wouldn't dream of it, Isa. You're far too strong-willed for that."
The guards approached Isa, a pouch in hand. "Señor Jose asked us to give this to you, Señorita," one of them said.
Isa glared at the pouch, then at Jose. "What is it?" she demanded.
Jose raised an eyebrow. "Why don't you open it and find out?"
Isa snatched the pouch from the guard and pulled out its contents - a beautiful necklace with a locket that contained a picture of her mother.
Isa's anger melted away, replaced by surprise and gratitude. "How...how did you get this?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jose took the necklace from her and fastened it around her neck. "I have my ways," he said, a soft smile on his face. "I know how much your mother means to you, Isa. I would never take that away from you."
Isa looked up at Jose, her eyes shining with tears. "Thank you," she said, her voice thick with emotion.
Jose pulled Isa into a tight embrace, and she rested her head on his shoulder. For the first time since they left her father's home, Isa felt a sense of peace. But as she clung to Jose, she couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them. Would they be able to overcome their differences and find happiness together, or would their pasts continue to haunt them? Only time would tell.
