Keiichi's Tempting Tangle with Rena's Reign

### Chapter One: Hot Under the Hinamizawa Sun

The sun blazed down on the dusty path winding through Hinamizawa, a relentless tyrant in the summer sky. Cicadas screeched their endless hymn, a soundtrack to the stifling heat that clung to every inch of Keiichi Maebara’s skin. He trudged along, his school uniform sticking to his back, sweat trickling down his forehead as he muttered curses under his breath.

“Stupid village. Stupid heat. Who even lives without air conditioning in this day and age?” he grumbled, kicking a pebble with more force than necessary. “I swear, I’m melting out here. This place is hell with better scenery.”

As if summoned by his misery, a figure emerged from the shimmering heat haze ahead. Rena Ryūgū skipped toward him, her auburn hair bouncing with each step, her school uniform impossibly pristine despite the sweltering afternoon. Her grin was wide, almost feral, and her eyes glinted with a mischief that made Keiichi’s stomach twist in a way he couldn’t quite name.

“Well, well, if it isn’t the big city boy, looking like he’s about to cry from a little sunshine,” Rena chirped, her voice dripping with mock sympathy. She twirled a strand of hair around her finger, batting her lashes in an exaggerated show of innocence. “Poor Keiichi, such a sweaty crybaby. Did you forget how to handle a real summer out here in the sticks?”

Keiichi stopped in his tracks, wiping his brow with the back of his hand as he shot her a glare. “Oh, ha ha, Rena. Real funny. Maybe if you weren’t so creepily cheerful all the time, I wouldn’t be the only one suffering here. Ever heard of heatstroke? Or do you just photosynthesize?”

Rena’s grin sharpened, and she stepped closer, tilting her head as if sizing up prey. “Creepy? Oh, Keiichi, you wound me. I’m just trying to brighten your sad little day. But if you’re gonna be a grump, I guess I’ll have to drag that city attitude out of you myself.” Her tone was sweet, but her eyes promised trouble.

Before he could muster a reply, she grabbed his wrist with a grip that was deceptively strong for her petite frame. “Come on, crybaby. I know a secret spot by the river. Let’s cool off before you melt into a pathetic puddle right here on the path.”

“Hey, wait—!” Keiichi stumbled after her, half-protesting as she tugged him off the main trail and into a tangle of overgrown bushes. “Rena, slow down! What if we get lost? Or, I dunno, eaten by bears or something?”

Her laughter rang out, sharp and taunting, as she glanced back at him over her shoulder. “Bears? In Hinamizawa? Oh, Keiichi, you’re adorable when you’re scared. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you from all the big, bad cicadas. Now move it!”

After a few minutes of being dragged through scratchy foliage, they emerged at a secluded riverbank. The water sparkled under the sun, a tempting oasis framed by smooth pebbles and swaying reeds. Rena released his wrist and kicked off her shoes without hesitation, her grin widening as she turned to face him.

“Alright, city boy, don’t just stand there like a boring lump. Get in! Or are you too fancy for a little river water?” She planted her hands on her hips, daring him to argue.

Keiichi crossed his arms, eyeing the water suspiciously. “What if there are snakes? Or leeches? I’m not trying to get bitten or sucked dry out here, Rena.”

She rolled her eyes dramatically, letting out an exaggerated sigh. “Oh my goodness, Keiichi, you’re such a cowardly city slug. There’s nothing in there but cool water and maybe a frog or two. Stop being a baby and live a little, or are you scared of getting your precious socks wet?”

He opened his mouth to retort, but before he could, Rena waded into the shallow water, her laughter bubbling up as she spun around and sent a deliberate splash right at him. The cold droplets hit his face, and he sputtered, caught off guard.

“Hey! What was that for?!” he yelped, wiping his eyes.

Rena’s giggle turned into a full-on cackle as she splashed again, harder this time. “That’s for being a total loser! Come on, Keiichi, fight back or I’m gonna drown you in shame. Let’s see if you’ve got any guts under all that whining!”

Grumbling, Keiichi finally gave in, kicking off his own shoes and stepping into the water. The coolness was a shock against his overheated skin, and he couldn’t help but let out a relieved sigh—right before splashing back at Rena with all the grace of a flailing toddler. “Fine, you asked for it!”

What started as clumsy retaliation quickly escalated into a full-blown water fight. Rena was relentless, her aim deadly as she sent wave after wave at him, her laughter ringing out like a challenge. Keiichi did his best to keep up, but she was faster, fiercer, dodging his pitiful attempts with ease.

“You call that a splash? Pathetic!” she taunted, lunging forward with a sudden burst of energy. Before he could react, she tackled him into the water, her strength catching him completely off guard. They hit the shallow river with a splash, and Keiichi found himself pinned beneath her, her hands pressing his shoulders down as she loomed over him with a triumphant smirk.

“Gotcha, city boy,” she purred, her voice low and teasing. Water dripped from her hair, framing her face as her eyes locked onto his. “Not so tough now, are ya?”

Soaked and breathless, Keiichi froze, suddenly hyper-aware of how close they were. The cool river contrasted sharply with the heat of her body hovering just above him, her knees bracketing his hips. His protests died in his throat, his face burning under her intense gaze as he struggled to find words—any words.

Rena tilted her head, her smirk widening as she leaned in just a fraction closer. Her voice dropped to a whisper, laced with mockery. “What’s wrong, Keiichi? Cat got your tongue? Or are you just scared of a little country girl like me?”

The tension crackled between them, electric and heavy, as Keiichi’s mind scrambled for a comeback. His heart thudded in his chest, his face undoubtedly redder than the Hinamizawa sun could ever hope to make it. “I—I’m not scared,” he managed to stammer, though his voice lacked any conviction.

Rena’s grin never wavered, her eyes glinting with amusement as she held him there for a moment longer, letting the silence stretch. Then, just as suddenly as she’d pounced, she pulled back, letting out a peal of laughter as she splashed him one last time right in the face. “Good boy,” she teased, standing up and sauntering out of the water with an effortless sway to her hips.

Keiichi lay there for a moment, dazed and dripping, blinking up at the blinding sky as he tried to process what the hell had just happened. His heart was still racing, his skin tingling where her hands had been, and all he could hear was the echo of her laughter as she called over her shoulder, “Hurry up, crybaby! Don’t make me drag you again!”

He sat up slowly, watching her silhouette against the sun as she wrung out her hair, completely unbothered. Keiichi muttered to himself, “What… what even was that?” But deep down, he knew one thing for sure—Hinamizawa’s heat wasn’t the only thing making his blood run hot.
