Kidnapped by Desire

### Chapter One: The Snatch and Grab Gambit

The jazz bar, *The Velvet Note*, was a sultry den of sin and sophistication, tucked away in the throbbing heart of the city. Dim amber lights spilled over plush velvet drapes, casting long, seductive shadows across the room. The air was thick with the scent of bourbon, cigar smoke, and forbidden promises, while the mournful wail of a saxophone curled through the crowd like a lover’s whisper. It was the perfect stage for a game of cat and mouse—and Viktor Kane was ready to play.

He leaned against the bar, nursing a glass of cheap whiskey he couldn’t afford, his sharp gray eyes locked on his target. Cassandra Voss. The name alone was a currency in this city, whispered with equal parts awe and envy. She sat at the center of the room, a queen on her throne, surrounded by a court of fawning admirers who hung on her every word. Her crimson dress clung to her curves like a second skin, the neckline plunging just enough to make a saint sweat. Diamonds glittered at her throat and wrists, catching the light with every languid gesture. But it wasn’t the jewels that held Viktor’s attention—it was the woman wearing them. She exuded power, her posture commanding, her laughter a weapon that cut through the haze of the room.

Viktor adjusted his tie, a little too tight, a little too cheap, and ran a hand through his dark, tousled hair. He wasn’t bad-looking—hell, he knew he could turn heads when he wanted to—but charm wasn’t exactly his forte. Breaking into safes? That he could do blindfolded. Seduction? That was a gamble. Still, the plan was simple: woo the heiress, lure her somewhere private, and nab her for a ransom that would set him up for life. Easy. Or so he thought.

He pushed off the bar, weaving through the crowd with a practiced swagger, and slid into the empty seat beside her. Her admirers parted like the Red Sea, though not without a few glares. Up close, Cassandra was even more striking—her emerald eyes sharp as cut glass, her lips painted a dangerous shade of red. She didn’t even glance his way, continuing her conversation with a man in a tailored suit who looked like he’d been born with a silver spoon up his ass.

“—and I told him, darling, if you think I’m signing that contract without a fight, you’ve clearly never met me,” she said, her voice a low, velvety purr that sent a shiver down Viktor’s spine. Her audience laughed, and she finally turned her gaze to him, one perfectly arched brow lifting. “Well, well. What do we have here? Lost your way to the kiddie table, sweetheart?”

Viktor flashed what he hoped was a disarming grin, though it felt more like a grimace. “Just thought I’d introduce myself. Viktor. Viktor Kane. And you must be the infamous Cassandra Voss. I’ve heard… stories.”

Her lips twitched, but it wasn’t a smile. It was the smirk of a predator sizing up prey. “Stories, hmm? I’m flattered. But I don’t recall inviting you to my little soiree. So, tell me, Viktor Kane, what exactly do you want? And don’t waste my time with flattery—I’ve heard it all before.”

He leaned in, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, hoping to sound suave. “Maybe I just wanted to see if the rumors were true. They say you’re untouchable. I like a challenge.”

Cassandra’s laugh was sharp, cutting through the hum of the bar like a blade. “Oh, honey, you’re adorable. Untouchable? That’s one way to put it. Another might be that I eat little boys like you for breakfast and spit out the bones before brunch.” She tilted her head, studying him with an intensity that made his palms sweat. “But go on. I’m curious. What’s your angle? You’re not here for my sparkling personality, that much I can tell.”

Viktor swallowed, his carefully rehearsed lines crumbling under the weight of her stare. “I, uh, thought we could get to know each other. Maybe somewhere… quieter?”

Her eyes gleamed with amusement, and she leaned forward, her voice dropping to a sultry murmur. “Quieter, hmm? What’s the matter, Viktor? Afraid you can’t keep up with me in front of an audience? Or are you just hoping to get me alone so you can… steal something?” She lingered on the last word, her tone dripping with innuendo, and Viktor felt the blood drain from his face.

“I—I don’t know what you mean,” he stammered, but the smirk on her face told him she wasn’t buying it for a second.

“Oh, come now,” she purred, tracing the rim of her martini glass with a crimson-tipped finger. “You’ve got ‘thief’ written all over you. The cheap suit, the nervous twitch, the way your eyes keep darting to my necklace like it’s a winning lottery ticket. It’s almost cute how obvious you are. Almost.” She leaned back, crossing her legs with deliberate slowness, the slit of her dress revealing a glimpse of thigh that made his mouth go dry. “So, let’s cut to the chase. What’s the plan? Seduce me, drag me into some dark alley, and hope I don’t scream? Or are you more… creative than that?”

Viktor’s mind raced. She knew. Of course she knew. He’d underestimated her, and now he was floundering in deep water with a shark circling. But he wasn’t about to back down—not when the payout was this big. He forced a cocky grin, leaning in closer. “Maybe I just want to see how far I can get before you slap me. Or maybe I’m betting you like a little danger. Am I wrong?”

Cassandra’s gaze darkened, and for a moment, he thought he’d hit a nerve. Then she laughed again, low and throaty, sending heat curling through his veins. “Danger? Oh, darling, you have no idea. I don’t just flirt with danger—I take it to bed and make it beg for mercy. But you? You’re not danger. You’re a puppy with a toy gun, thinking you’re a big bad wolf.” She reached out, her fingers brushing his jaw, the touch light but electric. “Still, I’ll give you a chance to impress me. Make your move, Viktor Kane. Right here, right now. Show me what you’ve got.”

His heart pounded, every instinct screaming at him to abort the mission. But her challenge hung in the air, a gauntlet thrown down, and he couldn’t resist picking it up. He slid a hand onto the bar, inching closer, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. “Alright, Cassandra. How about a dance? Just you and me, out there on the floor. Let’s see if I can keep up.”

Her smile was wicked, a promise of trouble wrapped in velvet. “A dance, hmm? Bold. But I warn you, I lead. And I don’t play nice.” She stood, her movements fluid and commanding, and extended a hand to him. “Come on, thief. Let’s see if you can steal more than a glance.”

As they moved toward the dance floor, the crowd parting for her like she was royalty, Viktor felt the weight of her control settle over him. He was in over his head, and he knew it. But there was something else, too—a spark of something dangerous and thrilling in the way she looked at him, like she was already three steps ahead in a game he didn’t fully understand.

The saxophone wailed, the rhythm slow and sensual, and Cassandra pulled him close, her body pressed against his with an intimacy that made his breath catch. “Don’t think for a second I’m not onto you,” she whispered in his ear, her lips brushing the shell of it just enough to make him shiver. “I’ve got my own plans, sweetheart. And trust me, you’re not ready for them.”

Viktor’s grip tightened on her waist, a mix of frustration and desire churning in his chest. He’d come here to play the hunter, but as her fingers curled around the back of his neck, her gaze locking with his in a challenge that burned, he realized he might just be the prey. And damn if that didn’t make the game all the more enticing.
