Landing in Lust: A Neighbor's Forbidden Force

### Chapter One: Stairway to Shenanigans

The landing between the second and third floors of the crumbling old apartment building was a place where time seemed to stutter, caught in the flicker of a dying fluorescent light. The air smelled faintly of damp plaster and desperation, and the creaky stairs groaned underfoot like they were auditioning for a horror flick. Mia Cortez, a firecracker of a woman in her late twenties, hauled a grocery bag up the incline, her toned arms straining under the weight of canned goods and a bottle of cheap merlot she’d splurged on. Her dark hair was pulled into a messy bun, strands sticking to her neck with the sweat of exertion, and her hazel eyes flashed with irritation.

“Fucking elevator,” she muttered, her voice sharp enough to cut through the stale air. “Of course it’s busted again. Landlord’s probably off buying another gold chain instead of fixing this death trap. Lazy, greasy bastard.” Her words were a private venom, spat under her breath as she wrestled the bag higher, her boots thudding against the uneven steps.

From the shadows above, a clatter of metal announced the arrival of Jake Hensley, her neighbor from 3B. He was descending with a toolbox in hand, his lanky frame slightly hunched as if he could hide the fact that he had no idea what he was doing. His sandy hair was a mess, and his faded T-shirt clung to his chest in a way that was oddly distracting, though Mia would never admit it. He caught sight of her and flashed a sheepish grin, the kind that screamed ‘I’m trying too hard.’

“Well, well, if it isn’t Mr. Fix-It,” Mia drawled, rolling her eyes dramatically as she shifted the bag to her hip. “What’s the plan, Jake? Gonna build a new staircase with those useless man-hands of yours?”

Jake chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck with a free hand, the toolbox swinging awkwardly at his side. “Hey, I’m just trying to keep this place from falling apart. Thought I’d, uh, check on some stuff. You know, be helpful.”

“Helpful?” Mia snorted, arching a brow as she adjusted her grip. “I’ve seen you try to hang a picture frame, buddy. I’m not trusting you with my groceries. I’d rather not have my eggs scrambled on the floor by a klutz.”

“Fair point,” Jake admitted, his grin widening despite the jab. “But come on, let me carry that for you. I’m not *that* hopeless.”

Mia smirked, her gaze raking over him with deliberate skepticism. “Oh, sweetheart, I don’t need a knight in rusty armor. I’ve got this. Keep your clumsy paws to yourself.”

She took another step, her confidence a shield—until a loose board underfoot betrayed her. Her boot slipped, the grocery bag teetering as she flailed for balance. In a blur, Jake dropped his toolbox with a clang and lunged forward, catching her just before she hit the stairs. His arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her against his chest, the scent of his cheap cologne mixing with the faint musk of sweat. For a heartbeat, they were pressed too close, her curves flush against his surprisingly solid frame, and Mia’s breath caught in her throat.

Her eyes narrowed as she regained her footing, shoving him back with a playful force. “Easy there, cowboy. Getting a little too cozy, aren’t you? What’s next, gonna cop a feel while you’re at it?”

Jake’s face turned a delightful shade of red, his hands flying up in surrender. “I—uh, sorry, Mia. I didn’t mean to— I was just—”

“Relax, Romeo,” she cut him off, her tone mock-stern as she crossed her arms, the fallen groceries scattered at their feet. “Don’t apologize. Just make yourself useful and pick up my damn stuff before I decide to use that toolbox on your head.”

He nodded quickly, dropping to his knees to gather the cans and a rogue apple that had rolled to the edge of the step. Mia bent down too, her movements deliberate, and as their hands brushed over the apple, their fingers lingered just a fraction too long. A spark of heat flickered in the air, her sharp gaze locking with his softer, uncertain one. She felt the pull, the unspoken crackle between them, but she wasn’t about to let him see it.

Standing tall, Mia crossed her arms again, her posture commanding as she tilted her head. “So, Jake, why are you always lurking on these stairs like some kinda creep? Got nothing better to do than stalk your neighbors?”

Jake fumbled with a can of soup, nearly dropping it as he stood. “Lurking? Nah, I’m just… I’ve got a leaky pipe in my place. Figured I’d try to fix it before it floods the building. You know, civic duty and all that.”

Mia let out a loud, unladylike laugh, her eyes glinting with mischief. “A leaky pipe? Oh, honey, you’re a disaster waiting to happen. I bet you’ll turn a drip into a damn waterfall by the end of the day.”

She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a low, teasing purr that sent a shiver down his spine. “Come on, then. Prove me wrong. Show me you’re not completely useless.” The air between them thickened, charged with a tension neither acknowledged outright.

Jake tried to match her energy, puffing out his chest a little, but his foot caught on the uneven stair. He stumbled forward, nearly face-planting, and Mia’s cackle echoed off the walls as she grabbed his arm to steady him. Her grip was firm, authoritative, and she didn’t let go right away.

Leaning in, her lips curled into a wicked smile, her breath warm against his ear. “Careful, Jake. You’d better not fall for me so literally next time. I’m not in the habit of catching strays.”

He swallowed hard, the flush creeping up his neck again, but before he could muster a response, she released him and turned to scoop up the last of her groceries. They made their way up to her door, the silence between them heavy with unspoken words. As she fumbled with her keys, Mia tossed one last barb over her shoulder, her tone dripping with playful menace.

“Keep those wandering hands to yourself, neighbor. I’m not running a petting zoo.” She flashed him a smirk, then disappeared into her apartment, leaving Jake standing there, toolbox forgotten at his feet, the heat of her words lingering long after the door clicked shut.
