Liana's Unyielding Temptation

### Chapter One: The Tease in the Boardroom

The boardroom at Poloskun headquarters was a temple of glass and steel, perched high above the city skyline. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting sharp angles across the polished mahogany table where Alex, head of marketing, sat with a notebook he hadn’t touched in twenty minutes. His pen hovered over the page, but his eyes—damn them—kept drifting to the front of the room. To her.

Liana Voss, Chief Operating Officer and the undisputed queen of this corporate jungle, stood at the head of the table like a general surveying a battlefield. Her tailored navy blazer hugged her frame with military precision, the crisp white blouse beneath it unbuttoned just enough to hint at the curve of her collarbone. Her dark hair was pulled back into a severe bun, not a strand out of place, and her piercing green eyes scanned the room with a predator’s focus. When she spoke, her voice cut through the air like a whip, laced with a dry humor that could make grown men squirm.

“Alright, team,” Liana began, clicking through the latest campaign slides with a flick of her manicured finger. “Let’s see if any of you have managed to scrape together a single original thought since last week. Spoiler alert: I’m not holding my breath.”

A few nervous chuckles rippled through the room. Alex shifted in his seat, trying to focus on the presentation, but her presence was a gravitational pull. The way she tilted her head just so when she was about to eviscerate someone’s idea. The way her lips curved into a smirk that was equal parts disdain and amusement. He was supposed to be married to his work—and, well, to his actual wife—but Liana was a distraction he couldn’t shake.

“Alex,” she snapped suddenly, her gaze locking onto him like a missile. His heart stuttered. “Care to join us in the present, or are you still daydreaming about your next golf swing?”

The room erupted in laughter, and Alex felt heat creep up his neck. He straightened, flashing what he hoped was a charming grin. “Just strategizing, Liana. You know, big-picture thinking. You’d appreciate it if you weren’t so busy tearing us all to shreds.”

Her smirk widened, but her eyes glinted with something dangerous. “Oh, I appreciate a lot of things, Alex. Competence, for starters. Maybe you can show me some of that today, or are you just here to look pretty?”

More laughter. Alex leaned back in his chair, refusing to let her see him flinch. “Pretty’s a start, isn’t it? But I’ve got plenty more to offer if you’d give me the chance.”

Her brow arched, and for a split second, the air between them crackled. The rest of the room faded away, the murmur of colleagues and the hum of the projector dissolving into static. Liana stepped closer to the table, her heels clicking with deliberate menace on the hardwood floor. She leaned forward slightly, just enough for him to catch the faint scent of her perfume—something sharp and citrusy, like a warning.

“Careful, Alex,” she said, her voice low but carrying a weight that pinned him to his seat. “I don’t give chances. I take what I want, and I don’t play games with little boys who can’t keep up.”

His throat went dry, but he forced a laugh, his pulse hammering. “Good thing I’m not a little boy, then. I’m all grown up, Liana. Ready to play whenever you are.”

The room went silent, the tension so thick it could choke you. Liana straightened, her expression unreadable for a moment before that smirk returned, sharper than ever. “Oh, darling,” she purred, her tone dripping with mock pity. “You wouldn’t survive the first round. Stick to your spreadsheets. Safer that way.”

She turned back to the screen, dismissing him as if he were nothing more than a pesky intern. The meeting rolled on, her critiques slicing through the team’s ideas with surgical precision. Alex tried to focus, scribbling notes he knew he’d never read, but his mind was elsewhere. On the way her fingers tapped rhythmically against the table when she was irritated. On the way her gaze flicked to him every so often, as if she knew exactly what he was thinking and relished making him squirm.

By the time the meeting wrapped up, Alex felt like he’d run a marathon. The rest of the team filed out, murmuring about deadlines and revisions, but he lingered, gathering his things with deliberate slowness. Liana was still at the head of the table, packing up her laptop, her movements precise and controlled. He cleared his throat, stepping closer.

“Got a minute, boss?” he asked, keeping his tone light, casual. “I’ve got a few ideas for the campaign I’d love to run by you. One-on-one.”

She didn’t even look up, her fingers flying over her keyboard. “One-on-one, huh? Sounds like a terrible idea, Alex. I don’t do private tutoring for struggling students.”

He chuckled, leaning against the table just a few feet from her. “Who said I’m struggling? Maybe I just want to impress you. Show you I’ve got more than charm going for me.”

Now she looked up, her green eyes pinning him in place. She closed her laptop with a sharp snap and crossed her arms, studying him like a specimen under a microscope. “Impress me? Sweetheart, I’ve seen your best work, and it’s barely passable. If you’re looking for a gold star, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”

“Maybe I’m not after a gold star,” he shot back, lowering his voice just enough to hint at something more. “Maybe I’m after something a little… harder to earn.”

Her laugh was sharp, cutting through the quiet of the now-empty boardroom. “Oh, Alex. You’re adorable when you’re delusional. But let me make this crystal clear.” She stepped closer, close enough that he could see the flecks of gold in her eyes, close enough that his breath caught. “I don’t mix business with pleasure. And even if I did, you’d be the last man on my list. Too much baggage, not enough bite.”

She brushed past him, her shoulder grazing his just enough to send a jolt through him. “Work on the campaign,” she called over her shoulder as she strode toward the door. “And keep your fantasies in check. I’m not a prize to be won.”

The door clicked shut behind her, leaving Alex alone in the boardroom, the city skyline sprawling out before him like a taunt. He exhaled shakily, running a hand through his hair. His wedding band glinted under the fluorescent lights, a quiet reminder of the life he was supposed to be living. A safe life. A predictable one.

But as he gathered his things and headed for the elevator, his mind wasn’t on his wife or the vows he’d made. It was on Liana—on the challenge in her eyes, the steel in her voice, the way she’d dismissed him like he was nothing. He knew he was playing with fire. He knew the stakes were higher than he could afford.

And yet, as the elevator doors slid shut, he couldn’t stop the smirk tugging at his lips. Dangerous or not, he was in. He wanted to crack that icy exterior, to see what lay beneath the control and the cutting words. He wanted to be the one to make Liana Voss lose her cool, just for a moment.

Even if it cost him everything.
