Chapter 1: Power Plays
The sleek, glass-walled conference room of Sterling Enterprises buzzed with tension, the kind that crackled like static before a storm. At the head of the polished mahogany table stood Vivienne Sterling, the company’s fierce CEO, her crimson blazer hugging her curves like a lover’s caress. Her piercing green eyes scanned the room, locking onto every board member with a gaze that could melt steel—or ignite desire. At thirty-five, she was a force of nature, a woman who commanded respect and reveled in control.
Across from her sat Damien Cross, the new investor with a reputation for playing hardball and a smirk that could charm the devil. His tailored charcoal suit did little to hide the raw power of his frame, and the way his dark eyes lingered on Vivienne was anything but professional. The air between them was charged, a silent battlefield of wit and want.
“So, Mr. Cross,” Vivienne began, her voice a sultry purr laced with steel, “you think you can waltz in here and dictate terms? I built this empire with my own hands. I don’t bend for anyone.”
Damien leaned back in his chair, his smirk widening as he twirled a pen between his fingers. “Oh, Ms. Sterling, I’m not here to make you bend. I’m here to make you want to. There’s a difference. And I’m very good at getting what I want.”
Her lips twitched, a flicker of amusement—or was it arousal?—crossing her face. “Is that so? Because I see a man who’s all talk and no action. Prove me wrong, or get out of my boardroom.”
He stood, slow and deliberate, his height towering as he rounded the table, closing the distance between them. The other board members faded into the background, sensing the shift, the heat. “Careful, Vivienne,” he murmured, his voice low, dripping with promise. “Challenge me, and I’ll have you begging for more than a merger.”
She didn’t step back, didn’t flinch. Instead, she tilted her chin up, her breath catching just enough to betray her. “Begging? Darling, I don’t beg. I take. And if you think you can handle me, you’re in for a rude awakening.”
Their words were a dance, sharp and electric, each jab stoking the fire. The room seemed to shrink, the air thick with unspoken need. Damien’s hand brushed her arm as he leaned in, his lips hovering near her ear. “Then let’s see who breaks first. My office. Ten minutes. Unless you’re scared.”
Vivienne’s laugh was low, dangerous. “Scared? I eat men like you for breakfast, Cross. Lead the way.”
They moved through the hallways of Sterling Enterprises, the click of her heels and the steady thud of his steps a rhythm of anticipation. By the time they reached his temporary office, the tension was a live wire. She shoved the door open, not waiting for him, her body already thrumming with a need she wouldn’t admit. He followed, locking the door with a definitive click.
“Last chance to back out,” he taunted, shedding his jacket, revealing the hard lines of his chest beneath a crisp white shirt.
“Back out?” She stepped closer, her fingers tracing the edge of his tie, pulling him in. “I’m about to show you how I play, Damien. And trust me, I play to win.”
Their mouths crashed together, a collision of hunger and defiance, her hands gripping his shirt as his found her hips, pulling her against him. She could feel him, already hard, pressing into her, and a smirk curled her lips against his. “Impressive,” she breathed, her voice dripping with challenge. “But can you keep up?”
His growl was primal, his hands sliding down to grip her ass, lifting her against the desk. “Keep up? Vivienne, I’m about to make you forget your own damn name.”
Her skirt rode up, exposing the lace of her thigh-highs, and she wrapped her legs around him, her nails raking down his back. The room was already heating, their breaths coming in sharp, panting bursts. She was wet, aching, and unapologetically horny, but she’d be damned if she let him know just how much she wanted this. Not yet. Not until she had him exactly where she wanted him.
